Get the Logitech Z2300 or Z5500. The rest of the logitechs are crap. Usually budget crap. I'd take the Z2300 over the budget 5.1 series, and certainly the Z-5500 challenge some bookshelf speakers too.

i can understand why some people do; its their "thing" and thats fine. i spend an inordinate amount of money on beer sometimes.

i can appreciate good sound, and the difference between low and higher quality codecs....but i only care about "good enough" as i generally listen casually, where music is background noise, or for streaming video or video games, where meh audio isnt that big of a deal

Just as long as I can get some pretty decent sound, I'm happy.

The z-5500s were worthwhile, as it made various types of multimedia and gaming quite enjoyable.

But yes, beyond that, I will not spend an insane amount of money on computer speakers.

Home cinema, on the other hand, I feel demands as much money as I can reasonably afford to throw at it. I enjoy good audio way too much, and to me, the home theater setup is where good audio belongs. For mp3 music and the various things I use my computer for, "good enough" is the perfect sweet spot. If I cared to, I could nitpick many flaws with any of the computer speaker sets I have used, but the ones I've had have been up to the task and performed in a way that I could ignore the flaws.

M-Audio Studiophile AV-40 (powered) monitors. They were about $150, very happy with them. There is no sub, though, if you're looking for that.

Of course, I got two pairs of Promedia 2.1s for a 4.2 setup (total was ~$85 shipped for both pairs) in 2005. Been rocking them ever since

I have a pair of Dayton Audio BR-1 Bookshelf speakers powered with a Dayton Audio APA-150 amp. For $200(both the speakers and amp were on sale when i purchased) i have not founf anything that sounds better, been using them for over 2 years now.

I don't think my Mkiii's have ever reached 1/2 way on the volume knob (the cops might come)

I checked the site I got it from and it looks like some of the models jumped in price. I had one I was going to recommend for ~$100 but it seems like its $178 now (ouch).

there are a couple of other ones you can find closer to $100 in there. I am really happy with my swan speakers, and this is from someone who came from z-560.

Logitech X-230. They were cheap and they produce sound... all that I really need.

I used to have a set of Klipsch ProMedia 2.1s but they broke. Sounded great while they worked.

If my X-230s broke I'd probably get a pair of thrift store/Craigslist bookshelf speakers and connect them via a thrift store/Craigslist receiver.

I can't believe those things are still around. My last system was the Z-2300 and I lusted for the Z-5500. That was at least 3 years ago.

Even if I keep the bass at minimum its still booming.
I have to tweak the Windows audio settings way down too.

Also, its one of the few systems capable of doing true surround in games because it has 3 pairs of analog stereo.
