I would not compare your Maryland State Laws to Virginia as they are going to be different. The Virginia State Laws are as followed. This is directly from Virginia's ABC website and contains the actual Virginia's codes with it. Read this and then you can recorrect what you just posted.
Checking Identifications
The law states that a customer must be at least 21 years of age to purchase alcohol. There is no legal requirement that a customer show identification, but the best way to verify the customer's age is to request picture identification.
Types of Acceptable ID
The acceptable types of identification for determining age are: valid driver?s license issued by any state or Washington, D.C., armed forces identification card, U.S. passport, foreign government visa, or a valid photo identification card issued by Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.
(3 VAC 5-50-20)
Elements of Acceptable ID
In order to be acceptable, an ID should include: photograph of bearer, signature, height of bearer, date of birth and expiration date.
(3 VAC 5-50-20)
Unacceptable IDs for Purchasing Alcohol
College/university ID, expired ID, social security card, government work ID, resident alien card, green card, international driver's license, INS border crosser card and INS worker's authorization card.
Now if you did any remote amount of research or said something intelligent I wouldn't have to respond to you. You're just like the lady who didn't sell me the beer because of my "incorrect" ID-- ignorant. If you're going to post something use fact not what you "think." Here is the support as to why the vertical license is acceptable, their is no room for arguement as this is the Virginia State Law not what you or I think.
1. Acceptable Identification is any valid driver's license issued by any state and D.C., the license you get when you're 16 regardless of whether it "looks" different is still a valid form of Identification under state law it meets all of the requirements. (3 VAC 5-50-20)
2. It accepts more than just a license as proper identification what is important is the information the ID has, NOT what it looks like. A vertical license meets all the requirements in 3 VAC 5-50-20.
3. If the vertical Virginia ID was unacceptable it would be found in the unacceptable forms of ID along with college ID's. It does not.
Back to restating what I said after correcting everyone who disagreed with me on here.
"I stopped at a gas station to pick up a 12 pack of beer, and the lady at the counter wouldn't sell it to me because I have a vertical driver's license." -- She's a moron and had no real justification for not selling the beer based on the situation. (I will uphold a business' right to not legally have to sell me alcohol without any actual reason, that is not the issue, the issue is the REASON she didn't sell me the beer, not whether she had to or not)
