What kind of BS is this?

I stopped at a gas station to pick up a 12 pack of beer, and the lady at the counter wouldn't sell it to me because I have a vertical driver's license. That's right, a vertical driver's license. VA changes to horizontal after you turn 21, but you don't renew your license until you're 25. I had some other items and she asked if I wanted them. I just walked away. That is the stupidest policy I have ever heard of.

Just stop going to that place. If I was a shop owner and had some ignornant employee. I would tell him/her to only accept the horizontal ids too. A few angry customers is better than the couple thousand dollar fine.

That's a stupid way of doing things. They should change or expire the license when you turn 21 like a bunch of other states.

For example, on your 21st birthday in NY, your license expires. Coincidentally, you're issued a new license that doesn't have "Under 21" on it.

Ohio is similar. If you renew more than 30 days before your 21st birthday (I had to renew about 60 days prior) you get the vertical license. So now I get to keep it until 2009. Last time I bought beer in Ohio the guy told me he'd only let me do it that one time, and I couldn't use the license in the future. WTF?! It's a valid ID! Surprisingly out here in Illinois I haven't had a problem, because nobody has a clue what an Ohio license is supposed to look like.
