Like most of the above, it's just a pretty shooter. Absolutely worth a play-through if you're into shooters. If you're really expecting anything more, you'll be disappointed.

I paid nearly full price when it came out, and I don't have any complaints. I'll probably play through it every year or so. The atmosphere really is great.

i love shooters but i couldn't get into bioshock. i don't like RPG elements in fps games. i couldn't even play past the first level in deus ex either.

I did load it up and play for a while; the art direction really is astounding. I'll enjoy it just for that.

The only problem is that at max settings with my 8800 Ultra at 1680x1050 I get a strange slowdown whenever I enter a new room or area. After that it runs fine, and the slowdown (really more of a sudden stutter) only lasts a second or two. Just long enough to be annoying.

And since this will surely be a single playthrough for me I've decided to wait until I eventually upgrade my GPU to continue the game.

It is an epic experience the first time you play it, but it literally has no replay value. Once you've beaten the game, you've seen and done everything, since it is extremely linear with no side quests or secrets.

It's a great rental or perhaps worth $5-$10.

It was the best game I experienced the year it came out, and that was a pretty good years for games.

I thought it was dark, brilliant and beautiful and there are a few moments that were simply amazing.

The level Fort Frolic is one of the best levels I've played in any game - it was made by the same guy that made that level The Cradle in Thief.

Here's a satirical review on the objectivist/atheist angle from a "christian conservative":

http://www.palibandaily.com/2009/03/08/bioshock-a-lesson-in-the-true-results-of-atheism/

I do, however, have two main criticisms of the game. The first of which is the ending. Now, being a good Christian, I of course recognized the Little Sisters as witches immediatley, and as such, when the time came to chose, I naturally chose Harvest, destroying the foul creatures and absorbing strength from their dissipated arcane magic. However, at the end of the game, it seemed to suggest that this biblical tendency of mine was somehow a negative, and portrays the player character, come the end, as a bloodthirsty killing machine. Nothing could be further from the truth, of course, which is why I assume this is nothing more than a bug on the developers part, playing the wrong movie for following the path of righteousness. As of yet, however, no patch has been announced to rectify this, but I rest assured that it is forthcoming.

Above average game; decent gameplay with great art direction and atmosphere. To those who say this is an "RPG" or "RPG-like", they have never played an RPG.

Note: Diablo is NOT an RPG!

It was a good game but extremely overrated. The gameplay wasn't anything special that hadn't been done before but the art style was good and the voice acting was well done.

Game Informer just gave it like # 27 out of their top 200 games of all time....Not sure I agree with that - but it's in there somewhere I'd say.

It's a fun game, but I could never really get myself into it. It's pretty, the different uses for the plasmids are nice, the environment is very cool, the story is ok. But the gun play just sucks - it feels like your character is waving the guns around while he shoots them, and it takes a ton of bullets to kill anything.
