Bioshock's one of my fav's because of the atmosphere, art design, voice acting, and attention to detail. I did, however, find some aspects extremely disappointing. Animations are meh, and the actual gunplay was no better than average... which is a pretty big con for a shooter.

All the mentions of Fallout 3 remind me that I liked that game for most of the same reasons I liked Bioshock. The voice acting wasn't as good, although this is partly due to Bethesda's brutal dialogue camera angles, hideous animations, and ugly not to mention boring character designs and facial graphics.

Maybe I'm just spoiled by Bioware's Mass Effect and Dragon Age though...

Had the game for quite a while, finally started it and I have a small rant. First the game started at default 1024x768, and the screen is distorted I couldn't click on anything. Took me a while to figure out I need to turn off Vista Aero. Next the game hangs at the loading screen when starting a new game. Took me a while googling to figure I need to disable tablet feature form control panel. I was quite disappointed at these nuisance from a game with a GFW logo.

The background, set design and storyline is more intriguing than the gameplay.

This. Nothing special about the game play .. pretty run of the mill FPS/RPG hybrid. The art design/direction is just wonderful, though.

Good game, it is the atmosphere that makes it. Story is pretty good as well, for a shooter.

Not sure why you folks are calling it a shooter/RPG hybrid. Deus Ex is a true hybrid. Bioshock, no: it has no freedom, no conversations, and no choices. No stat-based gameplay either.

Fuck the haters, GOTY 2007. Great game.

And anyone comparing it to Fallout 3 might want to play both games before actually doing so. It's like when people were comparing Metroid Prime and Halo. Totally different gameplay.

bioshock gameplay sucked, i liked the art the story the epicness, utter dystopia
the gun play was what was lacking because it felt really odd to use the guns

Heh..wow..all those different opinions. It has to be real hard for the game makers to produce a game that will cut muster. Well..on this one..I enjoyed the heck out of it. I payed full price back in the day, and never looked back. I can't say the same for other games tho.

Throw me into the decent but overrated crowd. Notable as the first game I started to notice the inflation of review scores on "hit" games in general.

It is fun, but not amazing. I went through most of it with the wrench, because there is no penalty for dying. Big Daddies are creepy the first time or two, but after that not so much because you can't really die.

I loved it and played through it twice. Great atmosphere and I enjoyed many of the elements in the game.

I bought the game with almost no preconceptions as to what it was about, other than that it was supposed to be a good game.

Great artwork design. I thought that the "city" really captured the feel of...what it was supposed to be and what era it was supposed to represent. The atmosphere was pretty creepy in some areas.

I enjoyed the plot. You might enjoy it more if you read a little bit about Ayn Rand's economic philosophy first. The plot is mostly conveyed through tape recorders found throughout each area, which is a bit gimmicky and plodding, but it gets the point across.

Nothing really innovative about the weapons (guns or plasmids), or the enemies. Actually, after awhile, the enemies got kind of boring. Although it is cool to be able to set somebody on fire and watch them run and scream in search of water.

I give it 3 out of 4 stars.

Depends.

Are you a stick up the ass forum gamer who nitpicks and complains about things 95% of gamers either don't notice or don't care about? If so, you will probably still like this game but it will be tempered by the amount of hype it received pre and post launch.

If you're in that 95% who just want to know if it's a good game and/or fun, the answer is unequivocally yes. Was it overhyped? I think the thirty 10/10's it got on metacritic might have been overkill. But it was still my favorite FPS of the year.

But you already bought it, so why not just play it and see if you can put it down after an hour?

Wow, this game is invoking some strong opinions.

This game was a solid shooter with RPG elements. The environment alone is worth the play through. I agree that the game was over-hyped and couldn't possibly live up to peoples wishes (see DIII) - but it was a great game IMO.

I couldn't have typed it better; I just got around to checking this thread.

I boycotted Bioshock at release because of the DRM but it was only $5 during the anniversary sale; couldn't pass that up. I'm starting the download tonight.

Wonder which camp I'll be in.

I liked Bioshock, the graphics, the atmosphere, and the story were unique and immersive. Towards the end it wasn't as good, but overall it was one of the more enjoyable games I played, the kind where you just want to keep playing non-stop.

The RPG elements are really non-existant. The shooter portion is all you really notice.

Anyway, it is pretty much just a shooter in a unique environment. The environment is probably the best part of the game, and it is really interesting at first. I had fun paying attention to the scenery.

However, the game is WAY to easy, and you fight the same enemies OVER and OVER again. I finished that game with max ammo for all my guns before the final boss, also without ever "dying", although you don't really die in that game.

Also, the choice of abilities and guns wasn't very exciting. As a result, I used the wrench a lot.
