What IT position do you hold?

I know there are jobs such as PC Techs, Sys Admins, Network Admins, Sys Engineers, Network Engineers, Help Desk, Computer Operators etc.

What's your position and how'd you achieve that position?

data center tech, with a side of windows/unix tech support and networking engineering.

the same day that I quit my previous job, my sister's friend fired one of his techs, so it worked out nicely 🙂 I was overqualified and they needed someone that they wouldn't have to waste a lot of time on training.

How long did it take you to move from CS to where you are now? Five years I'm guessing?

What is your job description like? Do you just fix/troubleshoot broken computers and remove viruses and spyware?

officially - Systems Tech II

edit: forgot, I applied, went to both interviews (which went very well) they hired me.

I do those, I answer help calls and emails surrounding various issues from network connectivity (inside and outside the building) to software assistance (how to merge lines from Excel into Word, for example) to changing passwords, etc. I replaced a bunch of old 15" and 17" beige/yellow monitors with some nicer 17" LCDs this past week. I set up new PCs and laptops, mostly by ZenWorks imaging. I also try to install and fix printers. I generally try to resolve whatever issue(s) a user may bring to us, and escalate (refer it to an admin) if need be.

Unofficially? Business Systems Analyst. My official title is Project Coordinator, in the Recruiting department. When our recruiting database went down I helped deploy a new one in 6 days. I've been the system expert forever after. Since I'm at work on a Saturday to catch up on my email, I'm considering demanding a salary to go with the cute title.

MIS Applications Manager at a health insurance company.

Applied via the website, interview, got an offer and accepted 😀

edit: just started last wed.

IT Assistant (basically an intern)

I basically do everything from the help desk to network/system/database administrator along with some programming and web stuff, plus helping people set up for power points. There is an official sys admin who basically does the same thing, he just gets paid 1.5times more than I do.

My official title is Network Engineer/IT Manager. However, I do just about everything from regular old PC support to Management of the department.

Helpdesk. Got lucky and found the job, persistance and initiative got me the job. Hopefully I'll be a network engineer by next month.

Consultant. I do a bit of everything for various businesses. For some clients I am "the" network administrator and for other clients I'm only invovled in special projects.

Got started three years ago as an intern; I just applied for the job.
