What is your next upgrade & how much do you expect to spend?

My next upgrade should be a motherboard, hard drive, and maybe even some RAM to go with it. That way, my computer will be able to function. Oh...I guess that isn't exactly an upgrade, per se.

Dual 423pin MB
Dual 1.4GHz P4's (Yes thats Intel P4) Supercooled to something like 1.7GHz
384MB PC2100 DDR-RAM
Voodoo5 6000 (Yes thats 3DFx Voodoo 5 6000 😉 )
Dual X15 SCSI Seagate Cheetah's in a RAID array
Next Gen A3D Card (Yes, thats Aureal A3d)
Any new Sony 21"

Fast enough for you?

"What is your next upgrade & how much do you expect to spend?"

Next time something craps out I upgrade it. So, what's the most expensive part that might puke short of the monitor? Hmmm, can't think of anything over $125 or so. Guess that means the next upgrade will be less than a "buck and a half". If the SONY 17" goes, I'll have it repaired! Uh, talk about "a cheap bastard!" 😛

Palomino Athlon, at least 1.33GHz
512MB PC2100 DDR (Can you say "no swap file?" I knew you could)
DDR Mobo (probably the Asus A7M266)
Seagate Cheetah X-15 18.4GB 15,000rpm Ultra160 SCSI
Hercules 3D Prophet II Ultra 64MB DDR DVI
TekRam DC390U2 SCSI Card
Midiland S4 8200 Speakers (or the Sirocco crossfires if they ever come out)
450W Enermax Power Supply (replacing the 300W Sparkle in my SC-750A case)

I've been waiting a long, long time since my last upgrade (February 2000!) and it's time to "kick this up a notch."

Here's my list for in a month or so:

P3 1Ghz
Asus CUSL2
128MB Corsair PC-133
Pioneer 16X DVD
Radeon 64MB
SB Live X-Gamer
Plextor 12/10/32
IBM Deskstar 30GB
HP Deskjet 932C
Sony G400 19"
Windows ME
and maybe a plexi-glass case from designcomp.com

I know it's way too much, but any opinions or suggestions? Thabks guys😉

Well, sometimes midway through next year I should get a job, so then I'll get an upgrade. I don't know what the hell out then so I'll have to wait.

I'm no hurry now, but next upgrade would probably be sometime next year.
AMD "Palomino" CPU, speed to be decided.
Motherboard with 266MHz, 333Mhz or maybe even 400MHz EV6 FSB speed and DDR SDRAM support
256MB PC2100 DDR SDRAM hopefully
Video card to be decided
Might keep the rest of my system

Crap...I'm not gonna upgrade my CPU until I can near double the MHZ for a reasonable price. I'm cheap!

My next upgrade is my freaken video card...the thing is like 2 years old.

Guess my overclocking & upgrading days are gonna be (very)limited now. Gonna be a Dad in about 9 months.

My next upgrade has allready happened.

New computer chair! I got a 360 dollar ergonomic high back executive chair for 50% off! Best long term investment i have made in awhile. The old "system" (chair) was a 99 dollar IKEA "Dave" chair, which was complete junk, the back fell off and one of the armrests broke off as well. It felt like i was sitting on a piece of cardboard, all the stuffing had been squished.

Just picked up a new hard drive. Maybe next I'll upgrade the old V3 to a Geforce MX card. Also another 128 MB of RAM would be nice. And a 19" monitor.

And with the spare parts I have after upgrading I should be able to build another machine.

Im waiting for my next upgrade from FedEX... hurry already!

Tbird 1.1GHz
128MB Mushkin HP rev2
ABIT KT7-RAID

only sad thing is I have to live w/ my v3 3k for a while longer... 🙁

760
lots of ram 256~512
22" monitor
80 gig HD (2x40gig 75gxp)
fastest avail CPU
DVD, Burner
rest of the stuff in any computer
plan on spening ~$3500

thats how much paid for my dell p200 back in the day, i think i waited long enough to upgrade.

Already ordered everything and it's a good amount of cash. Won't be in the hardware market for some time. First time I didn't get generic, cheap anything. Didn't wait for DDR because I'll wait a few motherboard revisions down the road before I go that way. Still may get a new monitor but i'll have to think about it while I rebuild my cash pile.

Oh yea...as for what will happen to what I have now...into the member server pile it goes. Suffer the same fate as the other old systems

Even though I just picked up a C2-633 (hoping for 950), my eyes are on this prize:

AMD 760MP Dual Socket-A Motherboard
2 x Thunderbird 800 Socket-A
2 x Socket-A Silver Chrome Orb Cooler
2 x 256MB PC133 SDRAM
2 x IBM Deskstar 75GXP DTLA-307030 30GB
2 x Coolmaster 4002 Hard Drive Cooler
Promise Fasttrak ATA-100 RAID PCI
Ricoh 8x/12x/10x/32x DVD/CDRW Combo Drive
Iomega Zip 250MB ATAPI Internal Drive
Imation LS-120 2x Drive (just for kicks)
Hercules 3D Prophet MX TwinView 4x AGP
2 x 19" Sansung Syncmaster 955DF Monitors
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz PCI Sound Card
Klipsch Promedia Speakers
Telex USB Digital Stereo Headset
3com 10/100MB PCI NIC
Microsoft Natural Pro Keyboard
Microsoft Intellimouse Optical 2.0
Antec Full Tower ATX case, 300+ W power supply

Minus the mobo, we're talking $3000 today. By the time the boards are available, Q1 2001, it may be $2K.

I doubt that AMD760MP boards will come with SDRAM slots...they are mainly for the high-end market and would therefore support only DDR SDRAM (in theory). You may have to wait for VIA's solution to get DDR SDRAM and SDRAM support.

Besides, why would you want to use PC133 in such a capable system? 😉

Well I just got a ASUS P3V4X and love it...so my next upgrade is probably gonna be something like a P3-700 to overclock to 933 (they are cheap now..). Right now I have a C566 @ 850.
Also probably a Geforce2 MX and overclock that.

My next upgrade is to my "slow" system. Currently a P233 MMX on a Tyan TX chipset m/b. Am having trouble choosing between an MSI K7T Pro with a Duron 600 (or 650 or 700) and an MSI 6309 with a Celeron 600 or possibly a P3 700. The combo would run between $210 or so and maybe $300 for the 6309 and PIII 700, with the Duron in the low $200 to 225 range. And then maybe a GF2 MX to replace its' existing Banshee card. Any input? It is a generic ATX case with a Deer 250 watt power supply. Would that pose a problem for the Duron? I have been very pleased with my MSI-6309/PIII 600E combo, and would probably be quite content with another similar setup.
Chuck
