My TDK 12/10/32, which I hear is a Plextor. Though I have a Plextor in my P4 system, they both work great.

were all supposed to love plextor but how many of us have them. I thought my HP9530i 10x4x32 was a good deal at$100 but $25 is ridiculas. and I stuffed that in a tower thats still a work in progress. I am using a sony 140E 8x4x32 and have made my share of coaster but I try to copy...errr...back up all my games and sometimes they are hit and miss. so far I have burned about 100 disk in the last couple months and am very pleased with the sony even if the price has dropped $80 since I got it and it wasnt top choice but did get honorable mention in several guides. I almost think any drive that supports clonecd would be adequate

Plextor makes great drives, but i don't have any problem with my (much) cheaper Iomega... not a coaster yet...

Oh my lord, don't you know this forum is 98% plextor zealots? You can't ask a CDRW question in this forum without getting a million and one mindless plextor responses.

I can't stand the new plextor drives. The 8x4x32 was an excellent drive, and it's the newest one I'd use (of the IDE camp, the 12x4x32 SCSI is a great drive to).

A 2MB buffer for a 16x burner? WTF is that? Yes they have burnproof but with a wussy 2MB you'll need it.

I'd much rather a 16x10x40 Yamaha with and 8MB buffer. My 8x8 Yamaha with 4MB buffer has never burned me a coaster (and it has no burnproof).

BurnProof is bad for making "Master" discs because it leaves gaps in the disc nearly half of what a CDRom can correct. If you copy a disc with these gaps the copy will get them as well. So if you get burnproof kicking in at the same place on the copy of the copy then you'll have data loss.

Burnproof is alright, but it would be nice if they put in a Decent sized buffer and just used Burnproof as a fall back.

If you must get one of these silly drives with no buffer and burnproof get the Ricoh, JustLink's gap is about 1/20th the size of BurnProof's gap, or about 1/50th of what a CD can correct. There is still the master disc issues, but you'd need a 40th order copy at least before it started to be a problem. And that's not as likely as a 2nd or 3rd order copy which is where problems can pop up with BURNproof.

BurnProof is overrated, overhyped, something you don't really need, and it can make copying from a copy very difficult.

Plextors are also insanely expensive (comparatively) though you can get around that by buying a TDK or an Iomega which are both apperntly remarked plextors.

ACK! what am I saying! the masses say plextor is the only thing to buy so you better buy that!

PS: I don't have anything against Plextor in specific, it's just burnproof. Everyone who uses BURNproof uses these wimpy 2MB buffers...I'd rather have an 8MB and no burnproof. If Plextor made a drive like that, that'd be great.

Yes, TDKs are great, because they come with Nero, a program most people want to "buy" later on. Also, the TDK drive is exactly the same as the Plextor drive, exactly.

And now TDK/Plextor introduced the 16x drive; you can find it for around $220 online! That's a great deal for a state-of-the-art (for now) drive! :)

Favorite 16x - Plextor and not just because its the Plextor brand like most people here. The drive is the best 16x out so far. Crappy software package though. Why they pack the idiot proof EZ CD with a high performance drive is beyond me.

Favorite 12x - AOpen CRW1232A - Rebadged Ricoh MP7125A. Has Justlink. Kicks the poop out of every other 12x drive I've tested.. and again it includes Nero 5.0.

I read some of your comments on BURN-Proof and JustLink. It's true that JustLink is much smaller than the OLD VERSION of BURN-Proof. The new version that is on the Plex 16x and 12x SCSI (and new Sanyo 16x) has a gap size equal to that of JustLink. Unfortunately JustLink does not have the software support that BP does.

zkmusa;

I don't think the 16x tdk is the same as the plextor. Some models are, but the 16xtdk shares firmware with the sanyobp1400p, not the plextor according to cdr-info.

chasm22, I think you may be right. I thought they were identical since they both were using the burnproof technology licensed by sanyo.

Hmm.. I guess I'll wait and see what the reviews say about which drive is faster.... :)

The Yamaha 16x10x40x I had and returned it. I went to upgrade the firmware and it went south.
THEIR SUPPORT IS TERRIBLE. I know this drive is noisy, it's fast, but it made 4 coaster for me right off the bat. Maybe I got a lemon, but TDK's service is way better. I emailed them for an updated firmware and NERO TDK ditital Mixmaster software and they sent me a new CD in a couple of days and answered all my questions prompltly.
Yamaha did't respond to one of 20 emails and I would't support a company that takes my 300.00 at the time and does nothing to back it up.
Also the buffer in the Yamaha empties very quickly, it seems as if it wasen't in sink with the copy procedure.
I will probably try a plextor next or sanyo's new 24x which is made by a third party.
The TDK works fine with Clone CD also.

I love the plextor too but it makes a seriously poor data-reading drive. My 8/4/32 does not read at 32x speed! I don't care what Plextor says! It ain't 32x!

But it's OK because I use my DVD drive for data reading and it is an honest 40+ reader.

The Plextor is a serious burning freak tho! :)
