That's only a main floor and a basement on a quarter acre of land. Your house doesn't even start to be considered big until 7500+ sq. feet. 5000 is spacious. My parents house is 4500 sq. feet, has 6 bedrooms, 3 full baths and 3 half baths, 2 family rooms, a pool room, movie room, storage room, but it doesn't look or feel big.

If you can look at a house and guess how big it is just by looking, it's not a mansion.

I agree. If you get lost roaming around, spend the next three hours trying to get back but never coming across the same room or hallway twice, then you're in a mansion. ;)

I think some of you have the words "mansion" and "castle" confused, but this has been a fun read.

funny that 3-4000 sq ft got lumped into a mansion thread. Even in palm beach where houses are all expensive, the mansion title is usually the much larger properties that are addressed by name.

A mansion encompasses the dwelling, the fixtures/et al and the property...most just have a big house. There are a lot of midwest/farm properties that would qualify as mansions if built elsewhere probably, but many of these lack the fit and finish that goes into one.
