A lot of people call my (parent's) house a castle. It's weird how perspective changes. The ironic thing is my mom had a chance to live in an *actual* castle, but that's a long story.

Ahem, anyways, my area has quite a few pretty nice houses. We've got some mega-rich people, but they don't build anything too extravagant, which I think is weird. I sure wouldn't hold back if I were the leading manufacturer of tennis balls, or head of a hotel chain, etc. That being said, they may not be huge houses, but the property they are on is expensive just because of the area. It's unfortunate because a lot of upper middle income people have had to move off of the area because it's taxed like mad. My parents got off easy because we're across the road from the lake instead of on it.

My dad also built most of our house himself, they're anything but rich. Middle income.

Anyways, that doesn't have much to do with the original question..I guess i'd say...9,000 square feet definitely does it- less if it has a lot of style.

Example of a mansion.

BTW... some of you guys' prequisites for mansions are pretty weak. 3500sqf? 4 bathrooms? Come on now. A real mansion would have a separate guest house with larger dimensions that that. ;)

Any house with more than 15 rooms (not counting bathrooms, closets, hallways, etc. - rooms like bedrooms, living rooms)

Standard house -

1 kitchen
1-2 living rooms
1-5 bedrooms

That's only 9. I'd suggest 15 should be sufficient to be mansion-like.

It also has to be its own structure (ie not apartments).

And it has to have a very large lawn

A mansion exudes quality of materials and craftsmanship. That entails stone construction and longevity for generations. The estate must include natural water features and wild life. Servants' quarters are preferably in the basement amid a warren of service tunnels.

It's not a mansion until you can get lost in it. Secret rooms and passages are also mandatory. Around here, virtually every single house is 3500+ square feet. That's only a main floor and a basement on a quarter acre of land. Your house doesn't even start to be considered big until 7500+ sq. feet. 5000 is spacious. My parents house is 4500 sq. feet, has 6 bedrooms, 3 full baths and 3 half baths, 2 family rooms, a pool room, movie room, storage room, but it doesn't look or feel big.

If you can look at a house and guess how big it is just by looking, it's not a mansion.
