Your question implies something is wrong with Mandela. Seeing how that is an opinion and not a fact, your question requires you to answer it yourself first. Actually it is more a statement than a question. It should be renamed "Something is with Mandela.", without the question mark. Then you should tell us what you believe is wrong. That would invite commentary unlike your psuedo-question.

Mandela said U.S. President George W. Bush covets the oil in Iraq "because Iraq produces 64 percent of the oil in the world. What Bush wants is to get hold of that oil." In fact Iraq contributes to only 5 percent of world oil exports.

Wow. :Q I was going to pile on with yowolabi and crew, but after actually reading that article I'll have to agree with kermalou. Mandela is going senile or worse.

Former South African president Nelson Mandela has slammed the U.S. stance on Iraq, saying that "one power with a president who has no foresight, who cannot think properly, is now wanting to plunge the world into a holocaust."

And the problem is?

"They do not care. Is it because the secretary-general of the United Nations is now a black man?" said Mandela, referring to Kofi Annan, who is from Ghana.

i have always respected mandela...but for some reason I dont think the reason we are attacking Iraq is because the secretary-general of the UN is black.

Mandela said he would support without reservation any action agreed upon by the United Nations against Iraq
So it's a "holocaust" if we go it alone, but it's all good if the UN approves? And pulling the race card like that is just ridiculous.

If misspeaking is evidence of senility...

he probably meant middle east, not iraq

Actually it may have been a rhetorical question, one that is does not need to be answered becsue the answer is obvious.

e.g. Do you want me to kick your A$$?

This is an example of a rhetorical question. Of course no one wants their a$$ kicked. Although he should have certainly backed up his statement with evidence as to why this question should be rhetorical.

Sorry, but there are way too many things wrong with that article to be explained away by a mere slip of the tongue.

Never much liked Mandela...but hey, now that we live in Bizzaro world... I do. He is wrong, however, in thinking its about the oil directly...the oil is a tool to achieve other goals, primarily protecting Israel against its neigbours and other "threats". Its a proxy war.

my question is exactly as stated above, where does he get the right to say anything about Iraq? First, he was saying that Israel is doing a Holocaust (Text) and now the United States. In my view, and it is probably very very distorted according to you yowolabi, Mandela is in the pocket of a leader or leaders of some middle eastern country.

Personally I find it insulting that he would infer that the Pres of the US is racist because the Sec Gen of the UN is black. Even if you don't like Bush's politics, nobody has ever called the man a racist. Yes, it appears Mandella is quickly approaching senility. What a shame, but it's understandable seeing he's been through so much.

His country is falling apart. Establishing a democratic SA has done nothing for his country- if anything his country is much worse than it was, even during Apartheid. So sad that a great man would come to this.

Where does anyone get the right? Are you saying Bush has more of a right? Not only is Bush talking about Iraq, he's planning on attacking it.

What exactly do you bribe a man with who spends 18 years in prison and said he's prepared to die, rather than go back on beliefs at his own trial. To argue that his viewpoint is not his own is laughable. You couldn't find a person who's proved he's more uncompromisable.

Why do people on this forum express surprise or indignation when people disagree with Bush's policies? There are a number of ways to loolk at what Bush wants to do in Iraq.
