there's a reason why NYC is one of the tourism capitals of the planet but your question is a little broad.

i can answer it with "what isn't there to do in NYC?"

Don't really have a fixed budget right now, but I'd say a few hundred (excluding hotel costs) maybe for those 5 days.

I might just catch a Knicks game if there's one scheduled during my time of stay, I've always wanted to see an NHL/NBA game at Madison Square.

I guess I basically just wanna tour the city and try out some nice restaurants.

empire state building
ground zero
chinatown
little italy
nyse(though i don't know if they allow tours anymore)
statue of liberty
central park
metropolitan museum of art(i think the rooftop bar will be open by then)
museum of natural history
moma
gugghenheim museum(sp?)
many broadway shows
UN building
battery park
south street seaport
helicopter tour of city
circleline/ferry tour around island
yankee stadium
madison square garden
west village/NYU area
times square
rockefeller center
david letterman show at the ed sullivan theatre
carnegie hall
lincoln center(they have ballroom dancing in the big plaza during the summer)
les paul at the iridium
korea town
little india

this is just a sampling of some of the things you can do here.

is this a couple's thing or a rowdy bunch of guys thing?

Jekyll and Hyde is a waste of good money. At least for a restaurant it is...its a tourist trap.

You could check out the metropolitan museum of art (12.00 suggest donation, but you can pay a dollar if you wish) if you're into art...

theres tons of museums on the east side next to central park...they call it the museum mile...if you're into that...

museum of natrual history has the dino exhibit, and the planetarium next door is a ripoff, but at nite it looks spectacular.

You can do a hansom cab ride...they pick you up around central park and ride you around. nice and romantic i guess.

for a super-duper meat fest go to churrascaria platafarma. it's $45/head but it is worth it. it's a brazillian barbecue buffet. if you're not familiar, what happens is that you are treated to a huge free salad bar buffet, but don't let that fool you because it comes with sushi among other things and it's all you can eat. when you're tired of that, you flip this little disk on your table which indicates to the many waiters walking around with huge skewers of meat that you are ready for them to visit your table and slice off a piece of meat for you. you can do this for as long as you want.

a fun thing to do is dim sum in chinatown, which in case you're not familiar is you all sit at a table and waiters/waitresses push these carts full of food around and you choose what you want to eat. you pay by the bowl. afterwards you can walk around in little italy for some dessert.

little italy has good cheap dinner eats too.

for really cheap eats you can walk around NYU and you can also hand out in washington square park.

there's also sparks steakhouse in addition to the steakhouses already mentioned.

there's tons of strip clubs too. flashdancers is right next to the ed sullivan theatre where they tape the late show with letterman. new york dolls is downtown near the financial district. scores is near the queensboro(59th st) bridge.

for clubbing, the more mainstream clubs are the tunnel(27th on the west side), webster hall(11th st/4th ave area) but i haven't been there in a long time so they might not be there.

for regular type pubs there's also the peculiar pub right near NYU.

if you're all really into sports there's espnzone right in times square.

for expensive popular sushi there's ruby foo's in times square.

for really expensive, exclusive sushi there's nobu but it may be impossible to get in.

for family style italian there's carmine's in times square.

really, you can find just about anything you'd want to do or eat here.

Yeh you can definetely eat new york... one of the best sushi places thats decently priced i found was Koi on 11th and 2nd ave. theres blue ribbon sushi in the west village that is exquisite.

Webster Hall now does a striptease contest on fridays. but my friends say there are more men than women doing the stripping now. Tunnel is now closed...i think they've renamed it although i could be wrong. the megaclubs (twilo is now spirit, limelight is now avalon) have a $30 cover. not worth it imho, because you run into the meatheads and the bridge and tunnel folk...

NYC pizzeria pizza. period.

EDIT: Oh, and there's a Japanese buffet restaurant called Minados in the city and Long Island. Buffet style oriental food + buffet style sushi/sashimi.

dude the food at the LI one sucks...and i think its a chain found around the country...DO NOT come here for minados. seriously.

1) I'm not too picky about my food, but IMO its pretty good.
2) You must be going cheap for the lunch special, right?

Also, you're right about it being a chain. I mean, come on! less than 10 places around the country counts as a chain right? http://www.minado.com/locations.htm

i went there with some friends and we enjoyed it. it's not the best sushi but all you can eat is a big plus.

another all you can eat sushi place we frequent is "funayama" in the west village(10th st/greenwich st) right near gray's papaya and the west 4th st basketball courts. it's only mondays and thursdays but it's $25 and you can order whatever you want from an a la carte menu.

Oh wow, never heard of funayama. How is the sushi there during the all you can eat days? I heard good things about another place in the Village called Tomoe Sushi, but I heard it usually is hard to get into.

museums are always fun... Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Museum of Natural History have always been my favorite.

you should also try and get tickets for Letterman, Conan, or The Daily Show. I believe all 3 are free, it just requires calling and asking for tickets as soon as possible.

if you're into rock music, catch a show at CBGB's. that club is legendary for rock/punk music.

imho tomoe is not worth the wait. theres a huge divide on this....either you love it or you hate it. personally i hate it...sushi was not fresh. and waaaay too huge. Blue Ribbon sushi down the block is much better.

Oh and plus you have to wait in line as they don't take reservations.

For shits and giggles check out the port authority bus station. hundreds upon hundreds of bus stops all stacked and layered into a run-down multi-level parking garage thingy. Had the pleasure of seeing it briefly as I flew into newark last time I visited.
