Sorry, Eli, I've been keeping meticulous track of my mileage for the last 10 years. Windows up, down, no effect on mileage. Turn on the AC, lose 5+ mpg. All of this with late-model cars.
Drag is no myth. That having the windows down creates sufficient drag to affect your gas mileage is a myth.

And modern cars are designed to have reduced drag when the windows are down. These designs direct the airflow slightly away from the windows and reduce wind noise even when the windows are up and reduce buffeting. It's the old cars where you'd get a tornado in the back seat.
Interesting.
It is interesting, and since I have been keeping track of this info for 25 years now with many different vehicles I knew what I was talking about earlier....put down the joint and pull that hair away from your ears and maybe you will learn something.

So now the self appointed environmentalist nanny-state conservation police not only gripe about what you drive and how much, but HOW you drive as well???

Just shoot yourselves, please.

Why does the AC put an extra load on the engine?

The compressor to run the AC has to draw it's power from somewhere. Take a look at the electric bill when you turn the AC on in you house. It goes way up because it takes a lot of juice to run it. Same concept. It's a drain on performance that costs you milage.

Highway driving in first gear, on cruise control, with the windows down and the AC up. In a Hummer.

btw - rolling the windows down does not impact fuel efficiency that much. I watched the tach as I rolled the window up and down, and it didn't vary more than one notch. 75rpm is nothing to worry about on a scale of 9,000.

That's because you pressed the gas a bit harder to keep your speed up. It's a subconscious thing, hard to avoid. Try filling your tank all the way up, driving a certain number of miles at 70MPH with the windows up, then filing up again and trying with the windows down. You'll notice a few MPG difference for sure.

As for the most inefficient situation:
how about the shuttle transporter going 70 mph in the left lane with the windows rolled down and the AC up 😀

yes, I know it can't go that fast, but just imagine...if it gets less than .007 mpg in "normal" use...

Damn. You beat me!

I stood inside that thing's caterpillar tracks. The thing is HUGE!

Actually, I don't really care much if all the SUV's out there guzzle a lot of gas and f up the environment. I just see SUV's as an extension of the "fat, stupid American" mantra. Do you really need that much car? I doubt it. I'm talking Escalades, Excursions, HMMWV's and the like. For both women and men, you HAVE to be king of the road and BETTER than everyone else. The ultimate in arrogance.

I think it's hilarious (and sad) to see a 5' woman with the blonde hair and the huge sunglasses (trophy wife...don't get me wrong I'd hit it in a second🙂)driving around in an Expedition or Escalade. You aren't that imposing! You are small and weak! Give me a friggin break.

I'm a libertarian and don't believe in victimless crimes and the like, but that doesn't prevent me from disliking you for driving around a monster SUV for no good reason.

Oh and as for A/C.... In my car it's A/C on the highway, Windows open around town. My A/C doesn't seem to affect my fuel economy.

AC doesn't affect it much either, at least in my car. I took a trip about 200miles long, went down there with AC measured fuel economy, came back without AC and the economy was actually better by .1mpg. So I say it doesn't use too much extra fuel (I attribute the better fuel economy to environmental variables)

You're just jealous because he could afford it and you can't. Get a better job and you, too, can drive an Excursion at 90 with the windows rolled down and the AC turned up all the way.

WTF do you care how he spends his money? If I could afford it I would definitely drive the biggest hunk of inefficient iron on the market.

Lol this is probably the reason you DON't have money. (most) People do not get rich by spending ridiculous sums of money on whatever suits their fancy. Conserving is key to wealth procurement.
