Most of my mp3s are encoded in 128kbps. Which codec would let me keep the same audio quality at a lower bit rate? Thanks

I believe WMA format at 96kbps is the equal in quality to MP3 @ 128kbs.. not quite sure, nor do I have the source at hand..

Sorry, but WMA ain't that great. Also, it's basically only supprted by microsoft.

Why do you want to make them smaller? Personally, I use the LAME MP3 encoder at 192kbps - and specifiy highest quality/speed setting. Sure, it takes an extra 10 seconds during encoding, but then you have better quality forever.

i would like to fit more songs onto my player so I wanted to start encoding my new songs in a more efficient format.

I find ogg the most efficient, but most players do not support that.

128k VBR is probably the best bet here. I'd still go with 192k MP3 personally.
