What is the most efficient audio codec?

I believe WMA format at 96kbps is the equal in quality to MP3 @ 128kbs.. not quite sure, nor do I have the source at hand..

 
Sorry, but WMA ain't that great. Also, it's basically only supprted by microsoft.

Why do you want to make them smaller? Personally, I use the LAME MP3 encoder at 192kbps - and specifiy highest quality/speed setting. Sure, it takes an extra 10 seconds during encoding, but then you have better quality forever.
