Atlanta has 70 on some of its major highways in more rural areas; 65 highways in the suburbs; 55 on highways in the city

So my answer, then, would be 70.

well, the federal gov't imposed speed limit during the oil crisis and lossen it during the 80's. some states have the option to pick their speed limit for rural highway.

Um, Montana has had a day time speed limit for at least 5 years now.

70 is pretty standard in Texas. Montana had no speed limit for a while. It was something like, drive a safe speed.

Ah, the good old days. Montana, America's longest quarter mile. *wipes away a tear*

The highest I remember having seen is 70mph on a rural section of CA-99 north of Fresno, although I'm sure stretches of I-15 in the desert on the way to Vegas had the same sort of limit.

States lose funding if the posted is too high. Though, this is the first I've heard of 80mph in Texas. Im sure they're not worried about funding considering who's in charge.

You weren't one of those bastards who drives under the speed limit in the left lane, were you?;)

75 is probably the highest I've seen...I have this vague memory of 80, but I can't substantiate it.

Hell no. I've run tests and have data supporting my assertion that I get better gas mileage driving 90MPH than I do 65. I get 30MPG overall by running all my highway miles at 90 (slowing to 65 through areas where the cops like to sit), and a PATHETIC 24MPG by doing them all at 65. So, uh, I drive 90 :p

75MPH through west Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.
Arizona was kinda nuts, I was doing 85 on I-8 and people were flying by me doing at least 100 if not alot higher than that.

The US needs a no-speed limit highway direct connection between the west and east coast. On the west coast it can connect to I-5 somewhere in Oregon or North Cali, im not sure where it would connect on east coast.

Can you say 16 lanes? :D

How long was this ago? I make the Nor <-> SoCal trip a lot on the 5 and it was posted 70 mph through Central Valley.

But the real question is, were you doing under 165 on that stretch of road?

Even better:
Gallego points out that under the ambitious 'Trans Texas Corridor' plan proposed by Governor Perry becomes reality, all of the 'Trans Texas Corridor' highways will have posted speed limits of 85 miles an hour.

So...I could be pulled over going 104 mph and still get off with defensive driving. holy. sh!t.

And I got pulled over going 95 on a nice and clear sunny day. I was reasonable and prudent, with no car in ahead or in back of me for a mile. :(

I know I've seen 80 (thought I saw 85, but I think I'm convolving my sighting of 75 with 80) -- but no higher.

West Texas where there are no signs and highways are straight with no cops for hundreds of miles.

I know a number of people who have gotten tickets there...driving 6 above the limit in the middle of a clear night w/no one around for miles and miles
