most phones don't ring these days. My son was in the shower and his phone was chirping (whatever) like crazy. What is the current phrase to tell someone that their phone has been active?

It's got avian flu. Toss it in a bucket of water.

Missed call - caller hung up
Incoming call - still time to answer the phone call

Depends on the situation. One call just a 'Your phone rang' (even if its chirping).

Constant calls to a cell phone with an annoying ring on maximum volume in the office when the owner is no where around? Put the shattered remains in a box with a note on it saying 'Your phone wouldn't stop ringing'

A "ring" is nothing more than a signal that someone is calling. Whether it sounds like a bell or not is irrelevant.

So yeah....it rang.

I agree. I will say that I typically say, "hey, someone's calling you." Odd

The phone is ringing. And yes, you do still dial a number.

Never mind that it's not literal anymore, the terms are still valid.

When was the last time you actually rang a doorbell instead of push a button?

I still call it ringing.

For landlines, there's actually devices in the phone switch called a ring generator, it's what makes the far end phone actually ring. You also don't want to be touching the terminal block when this happens. :p

Turning the ringer off and letting all calls go to voicemail/answering machine is the most civilizing thing in the world. The peace that will be restored to your life is so blessed you will wonder how you were coaxed into tolerating the ringing of a phone for so long. Silence is your birthright.

When I call an office's front desk, I still ask them to "patch me through".

Some terms just never die.

Sometimes people say "your phone's going off" if they cannot discern whether its a ring or text message or alarm.

Are you serious? Um, it didn't dawn on you that "hey, someone called you" could work?
