What is the campus security's right to stop you?

My friend and I got stopped on our bike for "riding without light".
They didn't just warn us, but they ID'ed us, asked DOB, wrote us down. What authority do they have and are we obligated by law to provide information?

I also observe other people riding right past them on their bike without their lights and they don't do anything. What does the law say about inconsistent enforcement?

would it make a difference if it was a private or public university?

is there a free legal center at your university where you can get a legal opinion on this matter?

I'd be inclined to tell them to go fvck themselves.

Might not even have been security at all. Just some people pretending to be, to steal your identity.

Yeah...as others have said, they might be real cops. If they carry firearms, more than likely they are police.

can they only stop you on campus or are they going to chase you with their campus police cars on the highway?

My Campus Police patrol the local roads around the campus as well. Though if a car chase were to occur on the highway, they would probably get CHP involved and then back off.

It doesn't matter whether it is a private or public university, it's private property either way.

You either play by their rules or you don't go there. If you don't want to stop for them or tell them to piss off, be prepared for any consequences, the most of which may be being harrassed/arrested then released, being charged with tresspassing... if the campus security is a full-fledged police force and not just rent-a-cops... don't be stupid. Putting up a fight because you think you are smarter than them isn't worth the consequences.

If you are a student there, your student status is likely under the condition of abiding by the college/campus rules and regulations, which likely include sections about the jurisdiction of the campus security.

If you got cited, make an effort to fight such a stupid citation.

To answer your question directly... "Their school, their rules."

If it's a state university, then they 'technically' have jurisdiction in the entire state - at least that's how it works in FL. As Mike said, they probably wouldn't chase you that far themselves..but who knows.

My campus "security" consists of real police officers.

yup, full blown police and fire here at Purdue.

Such is the case at every university I've ever been to.

Yes, campus security is "real Police". I dont think you wanna just fvck with them. They have authority over the school area, but thats like saying this car will patrol on this certain highway, etc. So, i think they can even stop ppl outside school area. but noone really does that, unless they end up in a chase or something.

We have both. Oregon State Police & Dept of Public Safety. It's the latter I'm having problem with.

They both work from the same dispatch center. DPS campus security doesn't carry guns and they're not real police.

I believe you have to identify yourself (IE give them your real name), but in no way do you have to show them ID of any form.
