What is the best way to clear away snow ?

my back hurts. i must've shoveled hundreds of pounds of snow yesterday.

are there any tricks, methods, machines (sanely priced), gizmos, newfangled chemicals or the like that can make
snow clearing easier ?

is it possible to prep the sidewalk beforehand with a salt or anything? are there special types of salt that work better ?
late sunday, i cleared the first few inches that had fallen and then laid a good layer of salt in the hope it would eat up all
the rest. needless to say it didn't work :frown:
 
Reasonably-sized heat-creating devices won't do much. I tried to melt my driveway snow with a lighted hairspray can, but the snow barely melted.
 
Now, if you were willing to douse the snow with gasoline or a lighter hydrocarbon, it might work because of the higher energy content.
 
snowblower ! ! ! ofcourse ! 😛 . .. . but what else ? ? ?

the kind of snow we saw yesterday hits nyc once every 5 or 10 years, so the snowblower may not be the best investment.

i should've phrased the initial post better. sorry. i'm looking more for something you can put together or resort to at the last minute,
minimal cost, and with most effective results. and don't say snowblower again 😛

Ummm....wtf? That would have nowhere near the heat needed to melt a large amount of snow. And I don't think I would call that a "heat-creating device", either.
 
I am surprised no one mentioned the ultimate solution:

hire someone else to do it, like a neighbourhood kid.
 
pay a kid in your neighborhood 10 bucks to shovel.

i am the kid in the neighborhood, relatively speaking. i am not sure why, but this place is filled with geezers, octogenarians,
and other old types 😀 i helped out my elderly parents at the last sec.

Lift with your legs, not with your back. Don't they teach these kids nuthin'?

The Television teaches us to look for quick and painless effects so who am i to question it ? 😛
 
If you have a garden tractor, they probably make a plow attachment for it, that shoulc only run a couple hundred instead of the 500-600 that a decent small snowblower will set you back.
