The band Nightwish has Tarja, who has perhaps the greatest singing voices of any rock or metal band in the history of music (she's actually an extremely talented Opera singer.)

Listen to the song Swanheart off of the Oceanborn CD They have some great violin parts in there. It's a somewhat low energy song, however, it emotionally charges me.

The song "The Siren" on their Once CD is a lot heavier and faster paced, they have some really cool violin solos in that song too, though it's also loaded with guitars, drums, etc.

Holy sh!t, another male Nightwish fan. I thought there were only two of us that actually listened to the music, and the rest stared at Tarja.

Actually, I know of another one, one of the guys at work borrowed one of my Nightwish CDs a few years back. The day after he borrowed it, he gave it back and said he wasn't going to need to borrow any more of their stuff because he had already ordered their entire catalog.

Don't get me wrong. I like how Tarja looks too :)
But honestly, I'm all about the music, and this is truly great music.

Anyone with a lot of bandwidth? The band openly supports free internet radio and does promos for at least one "station", so I don't think there'd be much beef over some MP3s. Then again, their publisher is RIAA. Damn gray areas

I'd just like to point out, that I think this is because Mp3s have actually really helped Nightwish to become a pretty well known band. If it wasn't for mp3's I probably wouldn't have bought 90% of the CDs that I have as I would have never heard many of the bands.

Another vote for Nightwish here. They seriously rock. Hard.

Very Very true.

OMG, so many Nightwish fans... and you guys aren't even from Finland??? :Q
Hmmm....

Nightwish for all... with some MP3's to get a taste of their music.

 love that song but I think it's synthed.

Listen to the Skyclad cover of that song, they use a real violin (in all their songs).

Nightwish rox indeed, as does Haggard, and there are a lot more metal bands which are worth listening to if you like the combination of violins and rock.
Within Temptation's Memories also starts with a violin. Therion uses violins too.

Aye, though most of my favorite bands tend to mostly come from Sweden (examples: Opeth, At The Gates, Dark Tranquillity, old In Flames, Arch Enemy), the Czech Republic(Examples: Isacaarum, Pigsty, Ingrowing), and good ole USA(Examples: Iced Earth, Novembers Doom, Death, Broken Hope, Nevermore).

Of course there are great bands from just about every country ......

I think "Human" by Metallica had violin in it... :).
I think it's acually "- Human" (as in minus human).

Anyway, its on their S&M 2 disk set, tons of great songs (and two new ones, -Human is one) with a full-symphony playing along with them.

Some of the songs are amazing played like that. The Outlaw Torn is probably the best song on the album.
I'd have to go with the Call of Ktulu\Master of Puppets combo as best on the set, but there isn't a bad song on there.

Oasis' MTV unplugged version of Wonderwall. This is one of the greatest live versions of a song I've ever heard... it has a whole string section going, with Noel singing, rather than Liam. Liam's "throat hurt".

An incredible performance, of an incredible song.
