What is the best oc'ing (AMD) system....

Seen many posts about this is a oc'ers dream machine. (non-sli and i believe a 939 chip series) In one topic someone stated not to use a asus board, because they don't like to be overclocked....

I looked and want to teach my 2 sons (along with myself) how to design, purchase, buy parts, prep rig, plug in, turn on... set-up, cross fingers as you turn system on..... all the way to oc'ing the various systems.

I am gonna buy a rig with all the bells and whistles but i can spend another 1-2k to build a father/son computer.

(its important that my kids learn how to read and ask questions and to actually have hands on with the technical side of computers, heck they play enough on it, the least they should do is learn how it works!!)

anyway, my youngest (16) asked if he could help build my new computer.... *eyes watering*... makes me glad.

i apologize if its somewhere in here and i was unable to locate it... i thank you.

Looks good, but after you read Zebo's post you could save some serious $$ by going with some cheaper pc3200 like Kingston/Corsair/Mushkin value RAM's. The Ath64 3200+(90nm) and 3000+(90nm) will reach 4000+(90nm) speeds as well as the 3500+(90nm) you have in your list. Save $ here as well. The mobo you picked is probably the best oc'er 939 board out there, but MSI is known for their inconsistencies with this board. You are correct in that the A8V is not the best oc'er, but will oc decently and is very stable. Don't know anything bout the ULTRA PSU's, but they sure do look nice lol. Personally I would go with pcp&c/OCZ/Enermax/Antec. Fast rig! :)

I agree that your kids should learn how a computer works, how to assemble it, etc.; at 14 I already appreciate the knowledge I've gained from here and from doing a build of my own. (No parental help, though; I'm the house's sysadmin as it is. Somewhat sad, but it's to be expected.)

I think you have a nice setup; you could save money on the RAM and CPU, as JBDan said, and probably the video card as well (try a 6800GT or X800Pro, something that's probably a fair bit less expensive). Pocket the savings for an upgrade a year and a half or two years down the line. Your money will go much farther.

If stories on here end up swaying you from MSI, try the A8V or the Epox EP-9NDA3+.

I've also heard of quite a few problems with those X-Connects; maybe consider an OCZ Modstream or Antec NeoPower if you want modular. PSUs made by Fortron, Seasonic, and I think TTGI are supposed to be good (these manufacturers make parts for brands like OCZ, PCP&C, and Enermax).

(EDIT: Since I'm no fanboy, I included a comparable ATI to go with the 6800GT that simply popped into my head first.)

An ocers dream is bang for the buck the largest oc for the cheapest price...

I would get a 3000+ or 3200+ but not the mocuh more expensive 3500+ which likley will top out at same speed in ocing....

I would shitcan the alienware...looks like a cheeseball case....Get a goot antec or coolermaster....

I agree with the above guys on the ram....

I recommedn OCZ and Eneramx with the Neo2 but not the Antecs unless you ae getting above 480watts...i dont know what it is but between this site and a handful of others there is more probelms with the antecs and their weak 12v rails and this board then almost any other I have seen....

Get ATI if you want....

to all thanks JBDan, ts3433 and duvie!

this will help allot.

Duvie i see your specs for your rig...looks pretty damn nice!

i am going to take it one step at a time, first find out what is a good system... (bah, who needs to worry about cost!!) but yes, best bang for the buck is always wise!!!

thanks again....

anyone else ???

Beany many OCers do worry about costs, that's one big reason why we OC, to reduce costs (basically get higher priced performance out of lower priced parts).

Anyway I'm 15, I'm the only person in the househole who can tell the difference between the motherboard and the monitor, so I basically run the show here.

Here's my setup:

MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum - great board for OCing

3500+ Winchester - the reason I got this over a 3200+ or 3000+ because when I got it it was on sale for 250 bucks.

6800GT - the Ultra (or X800XTPE) gives you unnoticeable performance gain, and unless you want to spend an extra hundred bucks or two on bragging rights, get the 6800GT or X800Pro and OC it!

OCZ EL Gold Rev2 DDR500 - even though this ain't the Platinum I got it because it runs higher, was actually cheaper than the DDR400 Platinum at the time I got it, and since timings don't matter on A64's I figured I'd save some money and go with these puppies. OCZ makes the best OCing ram out there imo.

Enermax 460w Whisper II - Ultra PSUs are ok but a lot of people have fried their parts with them, so I don't trust em. Get a stable PSU like Antec or Enermax, make sure it has a nice >24A on the 12v rail, and leave it at that. Mine was 70 bucks.

Anyway the only thing on there that is absolutely gross is the case, and unless you have it from a previous Alienware system it's probably not really an AW case (AW doesn't, or shouldn't, sell their cases by themselves). Get something that people trust, like Coolermaster, Antec, Lian-Li.

It's important that someone in the family (especially kids these days) should know a thing or two about computers, three months ago I had the impression that more hard drive space = better performance, and look at where I am now. I was pretty proud of myself for being able to fix the family HP's cd drives last week by deleting filters in the registry, and slowly it'll pay off. In the meantime lots and lots of Counterstrike!

Good luck with you and your kids' build, hope you get to bond with your son better, and most of all, have fun!

actually Mrvile and others who commented on the case, its is in someones sig.... i kinda like lee's tsunmi(?) (to tired to try spell correctly)

thanks mrvile thats is what i was/am looking for, people who's setups are real world rigs and have oc'd with them.

thank you to all and my kids are looking forward to making a computer... ( i am considering letting them get their hands wet and letting them keep one apiece (only 2 of the kids really care about diy system).

so i'll make 2 (one for each) thats if they show me that they are at least trying and learning...

good suggestions guys!!!

thank you!

I just came across this thread because I recently did a relatively cheap A64 upgrade (3000+ 90nm Socket 939, Abit AV8) and thought I'd let you know how it went. People always told me to get the K8N Neo2 Platinum for overclocking, but I didn't want to shell out $141 on Newegg for the board, so I got that $109 K8T800 Pro-based board, and i'm running at 2.4Ghz (270x9) with a Silent Boost K8 from Thermaltake and Crucial's Ballistix DDR400 ram. I was blown away when the load temp is 41 C, and the idle temp 37 C :).

I don't know if you're still deciding, but I just thought I would let you know what I use too. Here is a shot from CPU-Z. The HT Multiplier is at x4, and my RAM's timings are 2.5-3-3-10. If you're curious, yes it did go up to 290x9 with no troubles, but I noticed it really didn't give me noticable improvements in what I do from 2433Mhz to 2600Mhz;). I also use a 420W OCZ PowerStream PSU inside one of Antec's SLK-3700AMB cases. I think if I was to buy a new case for a new system, I would go with the SLK-3000B that they just released. My experience with the ever-popular SLK3700AMB has been so positive that their changes to the case can only be for the better.

I'm 21 and a Pharmacy Technician and i'm paying for all of my tuition and books for a 2-year degree in networking (with plans to go on for more schooling in the future) so you can bet I am pleased at my experiences :). What I really liked about that board was their orientation of the IDE ports. I use a SATA drive, but IDE for Linux and I also have that NEC ND-3500A to connect up, and it allowed me to thread them behind the drive cages so that you really can't notice a thing :).

Oh, and I really love how quiet that Silent Boost K8 is. The only thing I like more than a fast system that is very cool-running is when it is also whisper-quiet!

thanks, i'll sort out that info and add it to the top. (make it easier for us noobs wanting to build a cheap and oc'ing rig). as to the screenshot, i am still a noob and that is greek to me atm, but not to worry i'll understand all this stuff that i am reading on these boards....

:)

thanks!!
