almost all local phone providers have a flat rate plan (from $20-$25 a month for unlimited long distance)

Unless your local provider refuses to lease their lines and has a total monopoly. Like Verizon does here. Then there are NO flat rate plans available and you get raped.

That's why I got Vonage.

We do the Verizon plan that is a flat $49.95 per month plus all the taxes and nonsense which ends up making it $65.00 per month. My wife can talk to her mother 24X7 in Montreal and not worry about it.

Verizons site says they have a flat rate plan for Illinois albeit more expensive that here for some reason.

I used to use IDT which was $0.05 a minute all the time at $3 a month fee. Is there anything better out now? We just moved and I think we have the standard Verizon thing...not sure my wife set up the account.

PS - Not talking cellular here.

Can't you get unlimited long distance on your phone?
I pay Bellsouth $100 a month for monthly phone, DSL, and unlimited long distsance.

If you have BroadBand get vonage unlimited.

It's only $30 bucks a month plus all those kewll features like Call ID CallWaiting and 3way calling for free.

Try Chatham, IL

Just because it's available in the state does not mean it's available in every town.

I had MCI's plan in Champaign before I moved here. But here, there are NO plans available because Verizon owns the local lines and refuses to lease them. Some sweetheart deal with the town, I guess.

Smack'er upside the head w/ it and tell her her phone privileges have been revoked. Back to the kitchen and fix me a pie.

/Running in fear from the wife who's bound to read this...

We have unlimited long distance on our bill. Costs like $50/mo for the whole complete choice package from Bellsouth, actually a little less.

Just get a cell phone with 3000 minutes/month. You'll never run out if minutes. I haven't had a landline phone for more than 3 yrs now. Also, your marriage might have problems. Maybe if you guys talk more, she doesn't have to call others so much.

Well i did a little looking into Qwest and there are a TON of complaints about them regarding billing. Apparently they sucker you in with those rates and then change them on you after you have had service for a few months. I got tired of reading all of the complaints filed against them after a while! Maybe I need to try something else.
