What is the best $1,000 front projector ?

Increase the budget a little, and get an Infocus SP4805. Hands down, the best PJ under $3000, and it sells for $1300. I've got mine on a 106" screen, and it's beautiful. It will handle HDTV, and does an amazing job of it. Movies look great, even on an average DVD player, due to the Faroudja chip.

Infocus X1 (if you can find one)
If you're thinking of going the DLP route, then seeing it for yourself is a must!!! Seeing rainbows was a dealbreaker for me. I went with a Panasonic LCD.

The X1 and the SP4805 have the Faroudja deinterlacer, which at the price was unheard of. The X1a and the X2 don't have it. It makes a noticable difference watching movies. The X series PJ's have a 2X color wheel, while the SP4805 has a 4X color wheel. Faster color wheel = less rainbows, for those who are prone to see them.

I find it surprising that some people can't see them if they try - I certainly can see them if I try. But, the real question is do they bother you. Personally, I've only gotten a headache when I darted my head around and waved my fingers in front of my face for 15 minutes trying to see them for the first time.

I think the whole rainbow effect is blown way out of proportion.

I project onto a screen painted with something called ScreenGoo - check it out on www.goosystems.com. It really is great. However, a friend of mine just purchased a new DLP projector and tried out his matte white wall and it isn't too bad. Try it out.

hmm... that 4805 is looking pretty good. I seriously might have to go buy one now.
