what is the appeal of guitar hero?!

I don't think it is much fun. I think the appeal of it is that 1) girls like to play it more than most games 2) small groups can play it 3) you dont need high-end hardware to make it work (ie a great computer or a HUGE TV)

Personally, I can afford the hardware to make real games run really well (i.e Call of Duty 4), and I have a girlfriend, so I don't care about making random chicks happy in my living room.

Guitar hero/rockband are definitely overrated. Guitar hero is funner to play by yourself IMO because they extend all the songs to about 7 mins long and you have to a wait a long arse time between turns if you're playing with a couple others. Rock band you can all play at the same time (for $170...) but it's still pretty lame. The guitar the comes with rockband is awful in my opinion.

Apparently you do not know what you're talking about.
I know more girls who play guitar/hero rockband than I do guys.

The person I know who is absofuckinglutely amazing at it is my ex-gf.
my soon to be gf also kicks my ass.
and the girl who was too christian to be my gf is not bad(and too immature trying to act like she is more mature than everyone else.

All of my guy friends who play guitar hero/rock band (except the ones I met playing rock band at parties) started playing after I did, and none care for it all that much. Actually there is one I know who can kick my ass, but he plays because of my ex-gf...

So many lies :(

You're right, the christian girl also wants to be with girls, not guys :(
and I have another guy friend who had GH2 before I started playing, but he's spent maybe 5 hours total playing so I don't really count him... he doesn't give a shit about the game. He has GH3 now and Rockband, yet I'd say his total play time for all 3 is 5 hours.

Oh and my ex-gf I mentioned never wanted to label it, so we were just friends with benefits and I fucked the shit out of her... we worked together so it was best to keep things fun without much emotion. so not technically my "ex-gf" She's a hardcore /b/tard too...

But see, that's just more complicated to explain.

so many lulz :)

It's good, but definitely better with others. I cannot play it for more than 30 min though, whereas something like Fallout 3 I can play for hours.

As mentioned, it is femme-friendly. My wife is not bad. She wouldn't be caught dead playing grand theft auto though; it simply would not interest her.

It sucks. It's just for asian fanboys who think they will one day be Aerosmith or the Rolling Stones.

I am very very far from being an asian fanboy.
Growing up in hicktown I used to be racist towards asians, now I'm indifferent, I don't really care what race people are, as long as they don't wanna pull race cards and shit. I just like asian food.

I do really dislike many white people's obsession with japanese culture... i find it ridiculous.
i hate anime, etc.
I like sushi, teriyaki, chinese food because I like them, not because of their origin.

And I'd never, ever even consider playing DDR.

And I dont really care for aerosmith or the rolling stones... they have a few good songs, but not worth idolship.

I don't even want to be a guitarist.
The games are just fun.

I was given a guitar for my... uhh 8th birthday or something. If I really wanted to play, I'd play. My uncle's been playing for 30 years, he's as good as 99% of signed artists... if he wasn't fat and ugly he may have been famous.
So... learning to play wouldn't have been a problem either....

Oh and he sucks at guitar hero too, says he's not coordinated enough...
and theres nothing he can't play on guitar.

It's kinda fun to play, but I think DDR is better. One aspect I like more about DDR is that the songs are almost always shorter (usually 1:30 or so). Now, I have quite a few tracks in stepmania and some of them are about the size of 3 songs put together, but we'll ignore that. I find it's nicer doing them in short bursts rather than long drudges... especially if you're playing a song you don't even like just to get to another song!

But it's not a bad game and is kind of fun if you're playing a song that you actually like. I usually end up buying them just to play a couple songs. Like I bought Rock Band 2 just to play Muse's Hysteria and Guitar Hero: World Tour just to play Muse's Assassin. Albeit I bet I could get these for Frets on Fire... for free! But FoF isn't that fun to play (but that may've been because I was using my shitty GH2 guitar instead of using my wireless 360 adapter and using one of my better guitars).

i think one of th reasons why i didnt like GH is that the songs really dragged on. ddr is cool because each songi s about 50 seconds of pure madness, with some euro pop, jpop and other songs you don't normally hear mixed in. the GH music is the same crap that i've been listenign to on the radio for all my life.

I tried it a few times, would not say I'm good but I'm sure I could get better if I practiced, but I don't really see the appeal of the game either. I mean, if I was invited to go play with some friends I'd go for the social aspect of it, but it's not something I'd get for at home and play and try to be super good at. I would rather try to learn the real guitar instead if I was to spend that time.

the music in gh by itself has merits, but hearing them over and over is like listening to the damn radio, especially since they are 8 minute versions of each song

it's for people who want an excuse to "be cool" and spend time learning a game that mimics an instrument instead of getting off their lazy asses and use the same amount of time to learn the real thing

Or people that want to do something fun, like karaoke.
