In most cases it is for plugin in a USB Flash drive, or any drive in USB enclosure and using it as a NAS.

I think the OP is just trolling here.

The USB port depends on the model of the device...some don't even work at all.
 
Where's that quote that goes something like this, 'you have given us nothing to help you, no model, no brand, no baseline. In short your brain doesn't work and you should go live in a cave'? I see it in sigs all the time, and it is very valid to this discussion.

He's probably running an AirPort Extreme.
In which case the USB port can be used for external HD sharing or a USB printer.
