Noise filters can produce some screwy results

Only when used / monitored improperly. Even with such skewing the programming would be far more enjoyable without all that racket!

I noticed this while watching the ending of the Paraguay/Italy game today at lunch. If the buzzing is something that happens in every game, I will have no interest whatsoever in watching World Cup soccer.

If it's bad on TV...I can't imagine actually being there. That wiki link said they can get up to 120db infield. That's beyond annoying and reaching the point of being physically harmful to your ears.
Yeah, I think this would piss off the players more than anything. If you don't wear earplugs at that volume, you will sustain hearing damage. Just because the locals have already killed their hearing does not mean they should kill the hearing of the players.

Probably been posted but FIFA said they are not going to ban it. Said it's a cultural thing from SA and to basically get over it.

Noise makers in the audience. They are called zoo zoos I think.

hehe. Just listened to story about this on The World. (NPR). The president recently mentioned at a press conference to please respect South Africa's tradition, as hosts for the event, and let them blow their zuzus, after repeated and non-stop complaints over the noise.

Some anti-zuzu South Africans have mentioned that zuzus at soccer games only appeared about 10 years ago, so there is nothing traditional about it.

There was also a professional trombone player (the zuzu is very similar), talking about how the major problem with the sound is that very few of these people know what they are doing with the horns--proper ambesure being their main problem.

When you pack a stadium with crazy soccer freaks blowing on trombones all of them with the skill of someone putting a wind instrument to their mouths for the first time, something extremely awful happens. His advice was not for them to stop, but just "to learn how to blow the damn things, for chrissakes!"

I think those are simply those horns that amplify the noise you make with your lips and your own air. Could be wrong! But, my wife even made a comment while I finally got her to sit and watch 5 minutes of the USA vs England match. Bunch of fools...

WTF is a zuzu? It's called a vuvuzela. If you're going to make out like you know about something, try and get the name right.

just glad to know SA has no chance of ever getting a soccer event again.

Well I'll scratch the World Cup from my viewing pleasure, I can only listen to 5 minutes of that stupid horrible buzz before I just have change the channel.
I think that the next time they have a Super Bowl in New Orleans everyone can pull out a saxophone and maybe some trumpets too and just blow them to hell nonstop during the whole game. After all it is "traditional" in New Orleans to hear a jazz saxophone or other instruments during Mardi Gras and most of the year.

like you knew what the fuck it was 3 days ago.

I'm reporting the story I heard on the radio, not "making out like I know something." wtf the damn plastic horn is called is quite irrelevant to the comments, really. Sorry if I didn't remember the specific silly name that sounds pretty damn close to how I remember it.

go back to kangaroo fucking or whatever it is you do.

Vuvuzela filter
http://www.surfpoeten.de/tube/vuvuzela_filter

We’re hearing complaints everywhere about the noisemakers called Vuvuzelas during the world cup. Whether you are a fan of the sport or not, you can appreciate when a fellow hacker gets annoyed and start hacking. [Tube] has created a software filter that manages to remove the sound of the Vuvuzela from the videos. He shares the process of how it was all created, using Logic Express and a Mac mini (Google translation). Maybe this will also provide some relief from the constant stream of Vuvuzela whining as well.

I was over it 5 mins after watching.
I can't believe people are whinning so much over this.
