Are you suggesting only booksmart people should make money? Get over it, man.
No. But if someone dumber than me makes millions selling garbage to idiots I get to comment.

What have they done? Made bad records? So they made millions... So do lottery winners and nine times out of ten they are just toothless hicks.

If a customer wants to buy garbage, and someone fills the demand, then how is that person dumb? Why didn't some other "smart" person fill that demand?

Lottery winners do not "make" millions. They WIN it. Chance.

Everyone in the music industry, movie industry, etc, MAKE their money by presenting something that the public WANTS. YOU make not like Jay-Z's albums, or want to buy Sean John clothng, but guess what? Enough people do that it generates incredible amounts of money.

No matter if it's Jay-Z or PDiddy, Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera, Tom Cruise or Russell Crowe, if nobody wanted what they were offering, we wouldn't know who they are. Bottom line is, these guys have made themselves into successful businessmen and entertainers, whether you choose to associate yourself with them or not.

Based on your comments, I tend to think we're all dumber than they are, because we're not doing the same thing.

I'd have to agree with the "get over it" comment. I mean, i know that you're entitled to your opinion, and that nothing said in this thread will alter it...I respect that fact, thats what AT is all about. But the simple fact of the matter is that you're trying to somehow put yourself above them, as if the same way it took hard work to get into school, a lot of their accomplishments weren't achieved with hard work. There's plenty of artists who don't have outside enterprises other than music; these two happen to be better businessmen than that. Just because they managed to do as well as they have even coming from the background they did (which I'm sure was completely different from your own) is no reason to try to devalue their success because you don't care for their music. This is probably why people in this thread are being called 'haters'. Not because they themselves are "players", but because they recognize jealously being spoken out of bitterness.

Exactly. The entertainment business is one of the toughest businesses to make it big in. There are just so many people trying to make it. So to actually MAKE it takes alot of hard work. Not like the lottery at all where you just pay $1 for the chance. These people worked to get where they are.

I do. Except I see real live bands not simple beats I can make in my bedroom. I also taught myself guitar. I don't see either JZ or PD doing that.

The term "hater" is a defense mechanism created by "players" for people who see through their BS and know they are dumb. I will respect anyone with money who earned it with hard work. Not by peddling weak raps to dumb high school whiteboys.

If you could be making millions making "dumb music for dumb people", you would. But you know you can't.

Rappers are just as much musicians as guitarists, singers, electronic musicians, and so on. To think that any musician that doesn't play a physical instrument like a guitar has no talent is just arrogant. If you don't like a form of music, say rap, you won't be able to distinguish between good rap and bad rap, and therefore can't appreciate the talent it takes to make good rap tunes.

That said, I think puff daddy is a talentless rapper who owes all his success to ripping off 80's tunes and rapping over them (which admittedly was a good idea). He is a good business man but I think a lot if his success there he owes to his success in music. Obviously his fans are going to by his clothes, go to his resteraunts, etc.

No I wouldn't. I would make millions selling intelligent music to intelligent people if I really wanted to be a muscian.

I like hip-hop music. I don't like Puff Daddy because he is extremely weak in the lyrics dept. I don't like Jay-Z because all he does is talk about how successful he is. Anyone who wants to pay to listen to some idiot brag about himself is an idiot as well in my book.

I like to listen to music I can relate to. I cannot relate to some overpaid dumbass talking about how he used to sell drugs now he drives around in Bentleys. In fact, I doubt 90% of his audience could relate. It's music without integrity. It's for little kids and people without minds of their own.

Fvcking get over yourself, you would make millions selling intelligent music to intelligent people? Then why don't you do it, its not cause you don't want to be a musician, its because you are too fvcking stupid and talentless when it comes to music. I don't like rap, i don't like puff daddy, but he started with nothing and became more successful than you ever will and because you have such a small penis you have to get all pissed about it.

You sound like an idiot. Do yourself a favor and shut up already. A) I am not stupid B) I admittedly not at the level of being a professional musician. I have no desire to be a musician although I do enjoy learning guitar. If I did want to become a musician you can bet my music would have 1000x the heart of Puff Daddy and Jay-Z whether or not I made millions. C) My penis is the average/above average size for males of European descent, so your last argument is shot down as well.

Intelligent? Define "intelligent". FYI P.Diddy went to college, and that's where he got his start selling Tshirts and tapes... Jay-Z had street smarts, no way Bill Gates could have hustled crack just from going to college, he would be dead 2 minutes after he tried to push his first 8ball. Jay-Z is also intelligent b/c he used the money he made from drugs to invest in his career, he knew people don't last long in the drug game and just used it as a stepping stone.

So you don't like Diddy b/c he's lyrically weak... Guess what? He never started out RAPPING but as a producer. He had no intentions of ever rapping (and just producing), but found out it would sell more records so why not? Jay-Z, he brags too much lol. Maybe you don't like it b/c you aren't successful in your own life and can't relate? Hence the term "hater". The reasons that you dislike these people are infantile b/c of your ignorance, so all you know how to do is be jealous of people who are more successful than yourself.

"90% of people can't relate". That's funny, both went platinum how many times? Usually you don't go platinum if "people can't relate".

You should just admit you are pwned and don't know sht about rap or hiphop.

What college? Did he graduate? If so what degree?

So why does he insist on rapping? He sucks, not to mention the groups he produces suck too.

Like I said, success is relative. I have a lot of success and I am still not done. I am climbing up every day.

They can't. Unless you think every high school whiteboy from suburbia who makes up the bulk of PD and JZ's audiences have sold drugs and are now hip-hop producers. How can anyone relate to that? How many people have lived that life? Who wants to listen to someone brag about their achievements? Like I said, music for little kids and people without minds of their own.
You should just admit you are pwned and don't know sht about rap or hiphop.
Without going into details, I would wager I know more about the subject than you ever will.

From here,: "Combs majored in business administration at Howard University, producing weekly dance parties and running an airport shuttle service while attending classes. He dropped out to pursue an internship at Uptown Records, which led to a talent director position. Combs rapidly rose to the level of vice president and had success producing several key artists for Uptown, but left the company in the early 1990s."
The fact that you didn't even know one of the biggest hiphop producers went to college shows your ignorance. His entrepreneurial drive was already shining in college, making money doing an airport shuttle for college kids. Let me guess, you were a dishwasher in college. Consequently, I highly doubt you could ever become the talent director at any record company, let alone the vice president with some of the ignorant comments you've made.

So why does he insist on rapping? He sucks, not to mention the groups he produces suck too.
Wow, for someone who sold 3.4 million copies of his first solo album he sucks! Oh and producing artists Mariah Carey, New Edition, Method Man, Babyface, TLC, Boyz II Men, Li?l Kim, SWV, Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, and Notorious B.I.G all suck too, right? He wasn't named ASCAP?s Songwriter of the Year in 1996 for nothing.

Like I said, success is relative. I have a lot of success and I am still not done. I am climbing up every day.
Wow, your 401K must be going great if you think you're going to be worth 500 million someday.

Wow, so now you have to sell drugs to be able to relate? Your dad has to die when you're young to relate ("lived that life"), as Diddy's dad was murdered and Jay-Z's dad OD'd? Which way is it? To say white suburban people can't relate is a load of BS, drug usage is RAMPANT in the suburbs and so is divorce.

To summarize: you don't have to like the music to recognize success, and to say that intelligent people don't listen to a certain type of music (music for little kids and people without minds) has no factual backing whatsoever. Intelligence is comprised of many different things and it's sad that you can only equate it to "college".

No actually I made money in college driving people around... I guess I have the same drive as Combs.

Those groups do suck with the exception of maybe Aretha Franklin and Mary J. Blige.

500 million is aiming low. If I don't own at least 1-billion by time I die I will consider myself a failure. It's good to have drive. Let's see where Jay-Z and PD are in 20 years anyway. Stars like that die out quick.
Wow, so now you have to sell drugs to be able to relate? Your dad has to die when you're young to relate ("lived that life"), as Diddy's dad was murdered and Jay-Z's dad OD'd? Which way is it? Drug usage yes -- but drug selling? Do you really think white kids from suburbia can relate to drug selling, murdering people, etc? BS.

No, I equate it to non-juvenile forms of art. Not some dumb person talking about how he sold drugs to get ahead. Not "shake your ass" music.

@ dwell .. i can't quote all the things you said but i wanted to make a few comments.

1. dumb music for dumb people.
-- that's an mouthful to swallow. i can't believe you actually believe that. that's alot of people that you are smarter than.

2. When I do make it big, it will be from real skills and hard work. Not BS bragging about myself like Jay-Z does and just by chanting whack rhymes and living off of B.I.G's fat carcass like Puff Daddy. Oh yeah, and they both sell bad overpriced clothes to idiots. Wow.
-- i fail to see where Puff's Sean John makes money off BIG? Am i missing something? AFAIK, he barely makes any money off BIG. I don't know who owns the masters. but there isn't exactly new material coming from BIG or a greatest hit's album.

3. Gates got into Harvard. I would wager Jay-Z or PD could not get into ITT tech. What college? Did he graduate? If so what degree?
-- by your convention .. did Gates graduate? if so what degree?
-- Puff went to Howard University

4. No I wouldn't. I would make millions selling intelligent music to intelligent people if I really wanted to be a muscian.
-- tell me, what is Intelligent music? how do you quantify that? isn't it subjective? one man's garbage is another man's gold? ohhh. or is that only the REAL intelligent people would understand.

**like to listen to music I can relate to. I cannot relate to some overpaid dumbass talking about how he used to sell drugs now he drives around in Bentleys. **
so if you made intelligent music ... we'd listen to you stories of ... " I bought myself a car, an apartment in Manhattan, tons of computer eq, I make a good amount of money." as you posted.
-- sorry i don't understand what 'intelligent music' would be. define.

5. Not by peddling weak raps to dumb high school whiteboys.
-- insulting an ethnic group?
-- what about the other ethnic groups in high school that support and buy music? why didn't you DRAG them into this discussion?

As far as the Jay-Z and Puff Daddy being idiots.... i agree that having money doesn't exclude you from being an idiot. But they both have chosen wise investments to diversify their money. that's being idiotic? capitalizing on current trends and marketing it to the people are idiots?

That's OT, though...

And about Jay and/or Diddy owning a team, I'm all for that. Nobody's bashing the immoral things a lot of today's corporate leaders did to make their way to the top, simply because they're not in the spotlight like Jay and Diddy are, and they're not making a music in a genre that the haters of this thread don't approve of. Look, they got the money, they got the drive. They've already proven themselves as successful businessmen, and owning a professional team is just diversifying that role.

Not this:
From standin on the corners boppin
to drivin some of the hottest cars New York has ever seen
For droppin some of the hottest verses rap has ever heard
From the dope spot, with the smoke Glock
fleein the murder scene, you know me well
from nightmares of a lonely cell, my only hell
I would point towards something like this (for starts):
'N' every gimmick hungry yob digging gold from rock 'n' roll
Grabs the mike to tell us he'll die before he's sold
But i believe in this-and it's been tested by research
That he who f*cks nuns will later join the church

Funny how it was NO surprise at all that you would choose a quote from a single as an example. I say this because the same artist you quoted spoke on people with attitudes such as yours--"Do you fools listen to music/ or do you just skim through it?". He's made reference to the fact that as one person said before, he's taking advantage of current trends and marketing it to the people. Case in point-on his last cd:
I dumbed down for my audience to double my dollars
They criticized me for it yet they all yell "HOLLA!"
If skills sold, truth be told, I'd probably be
lyrically, Talib Kweli
Truthfully I wanna rhyme like Common Sense
But I did five mill' - I ain't been rhymin like Common since
When your cents got that much in common
And you been hustlin since, your inception
Fvck perception go with what makes sense
Since I know what I'm up against
We as rappers must decide what's most impor-tant
And I can't help the poor if I'm one of them
So I got rich and gave back, to me that's the win/win

Considering that the world of music is a lot like the stock market at times, if people are buying what you're selling, why change just because some person feels you aren't making music 'intelligent' enough for them?

Even if those lyrics were garbage, which they are, Jay's flow and wordplay is superior to anything you could ever conjure up. To say that rap lacks musical talent in the instrumental sense of the word, you may be correct, but vocally, to be good at rap takes a special individual.

How can you call those guys dumb?

You may not like their music but they made it big doing hard work. They were not born in to rich families. They worked hard and they saw trends and stuff in music/business. They capitalised on it and made themselves rich because of it.

If I could do that I'd be RICH. But I can't or don't have the drive they at least use to have. I'd say more respect to them for making themselves rich from very little.

As for them owning an NBA team who gives a fvck? They surely want their team to be a success as image is very important to them. They will hopefully make a better team. Better for fans and better to watch.
