What is my bottleneck?

Specs:

CPU: i5-2500k, overlocked to 4.2 at 1.284V
Mobo: P67 UD4 Gigabyte
RAM: 8GB G Skill Ripjaws X CL8 1600
SSD: Corsair C300
HDD: 500GB Western Digital Caviar Blue, 1.5 TB Samsung, 2TB Samsung
GPU: (2) ATI 6970 Crossfired

And yet...whenever I watch movies using windows media player, or even when I use the visualizer (CTRL + T) in iTunes, I constantly get this message from windows:

"Do you want to change the color scheme to improve performance?" Exactly like this: http://ma.wishmesh.com/wp-content/u...e-the-color-scheme-to-improve-performance.png

According to windows task manager, I'm using 4.79 GB of memory since I just closed out of Starcraft 2 a second ago, but 4.67/8 still seems like nowhere near capacity.

Where could my bottleneck be occurring? I don't get it.?

no way there's a bottleneck, just turn off the windows system notifications. also lol at those D: all over the place

I get that message now and then too when alt+tabing out of Bad Company 2. Somekind of windows or GPU driver issue. But seriously, you can just ignore it.

I'd be content to ignore but but that sometimes, it automatically changes to windows 7 basic ANYWAY, without my input. :/

I get one of those every now and then too but I just choose keep current scheme and it never changes any of my settings.

I think its driver related cause i got tons of those every day it seemed like on my gtx560.

Then i plugged in my old 9800gtx and some 266.58 drivers....they vanished....gtx560 goes back in they came back...

Try running WEI, maybe windows needs to "update" its info on your PC capabilities.

hmm, saw that a few other places as well as a recommandation. Will try and get back to everyone.

Edit: lol, 7.4 with my SATA III SSD being the WEI bottleneck. hahaha

Hmm, interesting note, according to the WEI, I am running DirectX10, but according to dxdiag, I am running DirectX11.

Could this be the cause of the problem? And how would I fix it if si?

Oh, one important piece of information I seem to have left out.

Whenever Windows would turn it self back to basic without my authorization, it was usually when I was watching movies in VLC media player. And I would notice tons of stuttering in the process - several skipped frames, etc.

Wasn't as big of a problem once I switched to Windows Media Player, though I now I get this message *requesting* that I change to windows 7 basic instead of the one *telling me* that it had changed to windows 7 basic.

don't use VLC, as the power of a thousand ponies commands you to stop using that thrown together mish mosh of unsettling applesauce

Only time I see that message is sometimes when I exit WoW. It's odd that it never seems to remember my preference, even though the box is checked.

When I launch AoE3, I get the message "Your color scheme is incompatible with this program" and it changes to Windows Basic. It changes back to Aero within a few seconds after I exit the game though.

Your two video cards must be tricking windoze into thinking they are each eating up 2GB of RAM or some outrageous value. Some kind of shadow copy? I thought that was removed a long time ago but maybe it is an option that you have enabled.

I have gotten that same message with a gtx260, 8600gt, and gtx570 with 4 to 8gb of system ram so that cant be it.

I get those from time to time when playing a game on the 2560x1600 monitor while watching TV through media center on the 1920x1080 attached TV at the same time.

(single GTX 480)
