how many quotes back shall i go?

where did jules say he's a pro racer, mr valentino rossi jr? no shit the SV will get beaten by a race bike with identically skilled riders. because they are...*drumroll* race bikes, meant for a track. but the real world isn't like that. everyone but you seems to be acknowledging that fact.

Now carefully read again - where did I say anything about pushing a 250cc to its limit? You'll note I very carefully said "80% of its limit), because discussing a bike's absolute limit is pointless for 99% of riders.

Reading comprehension - get some.

I had some jackoff at work ask me what size my bike was and when I told him 650cc he comes back with a puzzled look and a, "whoa, that's small" comment. Like I suddenly became less of a man because I ride a 650cc bike. He then proceeds to tell me he wants to get a bike but he's going to get a liter bike. I asked him why a liter bike? And he says, "I just like the way they look." I then asked him if he's ever ridden a motorcycle before and he tells me that he has owned quads and then tells me a story of him pulling a wheelie for 5 miles down the 15 freeway and about a friend of his who does stoppies.

Meanwhile, I ride with guys who have all sorts of different bikes from Ducati Sport Classic to a Kawasaki ZX10R to a Suzuki Bandit 1200 and I have no difficulty keeping up with any of them in the twisties on my lowly SV650...and none of them give me shit about my bike. Probably because they realize it's not about the bike but about the rider's ability.

I have another friend who just bought a ZX10R and he says that bike is scary fast, he rode an older GSXR750 prior to this. He never even gets it out of 3rd at 80mph on the freeway. It's just too much bike for street use. This is a guy I respect, unlike the douche I was talking to the other day.

Funny thing is, I've talked to a bunch of guys who ride super sports who have owned the SV and nearly all of them say they wish they never got rid of their SV. Then you see some guy show up at a track day on an SV and destroy guys riding liter bikes. It's easier to have fun pushing a smaller bike to the limit than it is to wrestle with a fast bike trying to find the limit.

I know I probably won't find much sympathy here in the garage because everyone here owns an 8.0L V10 650hp Dodge Viper. :p

Psh... noob... I had mine bored and stroked to 9.2L and it makes 900 HP now.

Dodge Vipers are crap because they only have 650hp from 8.0L. If they had VTEC they would be pushing 1200hp.

Speaking of motorcycles, are those Honda VFR's good bikes?

My only riding time comes from a 2002 SV650, and Ninja 250's

I've been wanting a sporty comfort bike if there is one... the VFR seems to fit the bill but are there alternatives?

Yeah but you get an equally skilled rider (and I know you're not that good - isn't this only your second bike?) and put them in a litre bike, and they will embarrass the hell out of anyone dumb enough to think their SV650 is fast.

The fact is that all else being equal, a 600cc or 1000cc sport bike will put your SV650 to shame.

You know, you're exactly like the guy I was talking to the other day at work.

My experience with bikes is limited on the street though I've spent a lot of time on dirt. I will mention that I've owned a group of cars which have been incredibly similar in total power output but all very different in the way they make that power: v8, little turbo I4, and a TT I6... and I'll never have anything other than a V8 or I6 again. I loved my LNF, don't get me wrong, but the torque is so smooth and linear and the cars are infinitely more drivable. I had completely forgotten that feeling since I drove the Sky for so long..

Displacement is fun. 5.7L V8's have such nice torque. To be fair though I've never driven anything that makes the same power with less displacement. With bikes I would assume it'd be the same way. 3rd gear at 80mph is like a V8 that can hit 55 without shifting out of first.

I have had 600's and I have has 750's

I have had 900's and I have had 1000's

I still like my 1098 better.

If it was a 1198 it would be even better.

Numbers do matter to me.

I don't see why the selected gear and speed has anything to do with anything. My ZX6R has a 16,500 RPM redline and it'll do nearly 80 mph in first gear. So? It'll do 80 mph in first gear, second gear, third gear, fourth gear, fifth gear OR sixth gear. Impressed yet?

Because being able to do those speeds means the engine doesnt have to downshift to be in the torque band. You can be crusing down the highway and want to pass somebody and dont have to downshift. You can just twist the throttle.

It's just a matter of opinion really. I like bigger motors myself. 600cc just take a little too long to get to the power. The new 600's will surprise you once you get them past 10k rpm. Some people like ultra high revving motors though. I think my favorite motor so far was my 99 zx9r. It would haul ass and had plenty of torque. Oh many a fun times with that motor... The zx14 I had was just too much motor. A flick of the wrist and you were well into going to jail speeds. If I get another bike it's gonna be a dual sport probably or a transcontinental tourer. I'm getting a little old (30) to be bent over the tank and my wife sitting on the passenger pillion the size of a slice of bread. Don't get me wrong. I love nothing more than the sound of an inline four screaming past 10,000rpm and being tucked tight behind the windscreen.

But it doesn't say anything about the capabilities of the machine, it just lets everyone know what a d-bag the person on the bike is when they're "cruising" down the highway at 70 mph in 2nd gear with the engine at 14,000 RPM.

I could just leave the bike in 6th gear all the time. I could cruise at 25 mph in 6th gear around 1500 RPM, or at 160 mph at 15,000 RPM. Does that make it an impressive machine? Absolutely not. It's just the way gear ratios work.

It makes it impressive when your at 2000rpm and can pass people doing 80. The whole point is low RPM preformance and not needing to downshift. My V8 can do that if its a normal car and not something beefier. In an I4 good luck, they usually dont make power until much higher up the powerband which means a lower gear.

So first, the ability to do 55 mph in first gear is impressive, then the ability to do 80 mph at 2000 RPM is impressive... are you simply just impressed by gear ratios?

Hold onto your seat and then start Googling big turbo diesel engines and 18 speed transmissions... you'll soil yourself.

he will crash the bike just like everyone who wants to get a "cool" first bike does.

Probably because they realize it's not about the bike but about the rider's ability.

I remember BITD I was reading various dirt bike magazines. USA had an incredible streak of wins in the Motocross des Nations. I think in the 80's the format switched to running the classes against each other. Every rider would run in two races, like this:

125/250
250/500
125/500

I recall reading about how Johnny O'Mara would nearly dominate the whole race riding his 125cc against 250cc and 500cc bikes, and he did it several times against the best riders in the world.

So yeah, rider ability can really help.
