What is it about anime?

I am not ripping on anime at all, I just never got into it and I am curious. I would just like to know why people like it so much. I see that more and more people watch it and enjoy it.

Please educate me.

Some people (such as myself) never grow out of liking cartoons. Anime is more adult than loony tunes, and follows as an extension.

in anime you can do things that would be way to weird looking, outlandish, and expensive for a live action show, like have giant flying space robots that shoot lasers out of their eyes.

I know what you mean, i was watching a series over at my friends place about this group of warriors that go to battle satan or something like that and the all end up being overcome by demons and one of the chicks was killed by being impaled on satans wang...

It's just like movies.. most of it is crap but some are good. It may not be your thing but it isn't necessary to rip on it. No matter how you look at it though, Anime > American Cartoons.

I'm not a fan of the stereotyped aspects of anime (e.g. large eyes, stubby noses, improbable hairdos) which are, to be honest, decidedly gay. What I'm a fan of are those works that feature un-Hollywood-esque themes, morally ambiguous characters, and best of all, visionary world design. Not to mention of course the copious amounts of unbridled violence, gore and other nasties that wouldn't appear in your everyday Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks fare.

the anime that's good would be good regardless of its format. I can't stand people who will watch something just because it's anime, though.
