Please educate me.

Well I dont feel like ripping on your diet either, but you will never convince me to become a heavy meat eater. I like veggies more and there is simply no easy way for you to convince me why people like meat so much and can never get enough of it. Could you possibly educate me on that?

on a serious note, its nothing more than a typical cultural clash. if you are into japanese culture - movies, music, sense of humor etc you will be naturally drawn to some of the stuff. conversely, if you are an egotistical type that just has to avidly spread hate on something seems alien to you, anime makes a perfect scapegoat to pick on.

To say like anime is very broad statement; there are animes i love and animes i cant stand. it is no different than saying you like movies - just cuz you liked the Godfather it doesnt mean you would find Soul Plane enjoyable, does it now? most series are hit and miss, as many of anime fan are more critical viewers than i-watch-whatever-they-show-in-the-movies folks.

One thing that sets apart anime from Holywood flicks is they are mostly comprised of 12-24episodes (mostly) and 3-20minutes per episodes. they are given a freedom of unfolding a story with a whole lot more time with relative freedom. this is evident as even with anime, many OVAs are highly criticized for trying to hard to condense the story by leaving out or chaing some important incidents form the original (manga, novel or game, sometimes original) not only this is much more effective way of storytelling, it creates a residual effect as a series gets aired over many weeks instead of just one set period. unlike cheesy american shows like buffy there is a whole lot more fandom and as such more efforts and time/money is spent to make things likeable.

studies say attention span for an average person doesnt last longer than 10 minutes. most of anime i watch are either 10 minutes per episode or have 'eye catch's between the first and last 10 minutes.

Last but not least here is an obligatory comment : If you are truly interested why anime and japanese games sell well all over the world, read Toshio Okada's book on otaku culture.

can't I just find it boring and overly complicated without being anti-Japanese?

I've seen some good anime, but a lot of it makes me feel like I'm watching a sci-fi/fantasy soap opera that happens to be in cartoon form.

No. If you are indifferent towards Japan you will love all anime. If you love Japan, you will love anime. If you hate anime, you hate Japan. There is no middle ground.

Seriously though, some of it is good and some of it isn't. Which are the good ones is left up to the viewer. :) I think VanillaH's comment was directed towards the people that think anime is crap, and make sure everyone knows that they think that, without having ever really watched it.

EDIT: With that said, I haven't found any worthwhile Japanese comics. :p

I'm not a fan of the stereotyped aspects of anime (e.g. large eyes, stubby noses, improbable hairdos) which are, to be honest, decidedly gay. What I'm a fan of are those works that feature un-Hollywood-esque themes, morally ambiguous characters, and best of all, visionary world design. Not to mention of course the copious amounts of unbridled violence, gore and other nasties that wouldn't appear in your everyday Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks fare.

So you liked AKIRA too eh?

Just to kind of correct my comic book statement: The Japanese Wolverine short (Snikt?) was pretty good.

If you are calling it a "woo woo" you are probably too young to see it anyways.

LMAO!
