What is ice dancing?

I know what figure skating it, but i have never heard of "ice dancing"

does it literally mean dancing on ice?

Ice dancing is to figure skating as softball is to baseball.

It's sort of like the couples or pairs regular ice skating, only a bit more like dancing.

It's a more artistic form of pairs ice skating, with less emphasis on "triple axles" and more on dance. The best ice dancing performance ever was Jayne Torville and Christopher Dean's performance to "Bolero" at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo.
