Is that athlon a tbird??? It matters as the tbirds had more cache and ran at full speed versus 1/2 of the athlon classic....the celeron is neutered due to the 1/2 size of cache as a regular p4.....I think I saw a reference that a 2ghz celeron was slower then a 1.6a ghz northwood (in gaming) so I would say even conservatively the 1.8ghz celeron is likely better then a 1.4ghz p4 willamette and therefore better then the athon 900mhz even if a tbird....The celeron still does have all the sse and sse2 instructions which an athlon 900mhz does not...

I would guess that since Athlons have way better FPU than the Celeron, it would probably outperform it in 3Dmark since it's a rather FPU intensive software? But since the Celeron is running at twice the clock speed..I'm scratching my head. Are both m/b using the same type of RAM?

Forget both of those... upgrade to a more useful solution... for $120 you can get a decent Athlon XP CPU and mobo... something that will definately blow away either of those options you listed
Actually... if you're looking to upgrade... I have an AMD XP1700 and MSI motherboard to go with it for sale... both used, so I'd make you a good deal on them... PM me if you're interested.

Jeff7181 has the answer, rid yourself of the Celeron (can you take this system back for a refund?) and build something else. I suggest going to 512Mb of RAM too, especially if you're using WinXP. There are some games now that are benefitting from the jump to 1Gb of RAM.

I have never seen anyone benchmark the Socket478 Celeron with PC133. Just trust us all on this one... it's like... --ok wait, I don't even want to put that analogy in print. :p Let's see... ok, it's like buying the cheapest mac & cheese the grocery store has, and throwing away half the cheese mix.

For a good replacement on a budget, get yourself an AthlonXP 2400+, an Asus A7N266-VM, a stick of 512Mb Crucial PC2100 unbuffered non-parity memory, and a Sparkle Power 350W power supply. You get onboard LAN, onboard six-channel high-performance audio with digital output (both optical and coax), onboard video plus an AGP slot, and probably 3DMark2001SE scores in the 10000 area using your Ti4200 (just an off-the-cuff guess).

Does it overclock? No. Does it have the ultimate forward upgradability? No. But it gets you going for about $280. You could spend a little more and get an nForce2 board if you want.
