What is a good cable modem for Comcast|?

I also just read on DSL reports that comcast actually sets their cap at 1800 so the 1500 down speed cabability is always there...

i think my (comcast cable modem is a scientific atlanta (emphasis on think) anyway i get 30 ping in CS and BF1942 with 250K downloads. So, i am happy. It might just be because i am the only guy in Mississippi that has broadband. Everyone else in my state uses AOL.

They have a posted acceptable use policy on the site. It's kind of complex, like most of those are these days.

Where I live the service is shitty and they will do nothing about it. Especially if you own your own cable modem. They usually take 2 week o fix any problem and you have to be at your home between a 4 hour time span to get your problem fixed. Like my IM away message says:

AT&T or comcast...who cares they both can't supply reliable internet access worth their life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok i dont know about getting sH(tty service..i did have problems with modems not syncing up..so i called them to get me a new modem. this is the 4th modem i am going on..which seems to be working fine..its the RCA 305 modem..so i think giving them the 3 bucks a month and forget about getting one..cause if ur modem funks up then they'll just put all the problems on ur modem.. it jsut easier for them to do that then to really look at your problem..

Using Comcast in Dallas, TX and it's awesome.. just rent the modem for 3 bucks a month, it works fine. Only problem I had was my fault, I flashed the BIOS on my old motherboard and it apparantly cleared the onboard NIC's MAC address to all 0's, which gave me a ton of connection problems

Update on the comcast..

My speeds are coming in at about 1700 down 235 up... (1500/256)

No download cap.

Install was quick by the techs.

I'm just east of seattle, and I can run a red faction server with 12 people connected, each having roughly low 100's for ping time. Quite good! I heard from some source that Comcast is changing some things in there contract... basically that puting multiple computers behind a NAT device (router) will be a service terminating breach of contract! Anyone else heard of this? If its true, then I'm going to have to find something else... I have 7 machines behind mine!

But renting (leasing) a modem is nice because if it goes down, they will replace it.

Lord Evermore, you live in Lowell right? I just canceled cable b/c i was in college and my family moved to a different part if lowell. I was gonna get comcast, but i have no idea how it is compared to my old area (I used to live near Umass, down the street from the market basket) Can you PM me and tell me what part of lowell you are in?

I have Comcast in NJ and it's not bad. In fact, it's pretty reliable. It's gone down maybe twice last year for a few hours each time.
The only thing I want is more bandwidth.

With cable modems so cheap these days (I picked up a Toshiba PCX2200 for ~$50 from BB B&M no rebates), I say go for it.
If you plan to keep cable long enough, it'll eventually pay for itself. If not, you can always resell it on here or on ebay and end up making money.

They also have a pretty decent supported modems list. In fact, I bought a DOCSIS modem not on their supported list (a discontinued 3COM for dirt cheap), and they were able to get it to work

It's quake2 Lithium with a Fasthook. It's pretty packed even though Lithium mod is dead. They have other game servers as well. Just goto www.labtyd.com and it displays all the servers to access.

I heard the motorola surf boards are great, but ill stick to the lease if the RCAs are decent...

Go to Circuit City....they have a FREE Motorola Surfboard 4100 modem right now when you sign up to Comcast through them.
When I first joined I got 100 dollar certificate and 30 dollars off the modem. (modem was 130 back then).

Edit: Also the RCA modems have been about the worst reliability wise. Toshiba and Motorola the best. Linksys and DLink have had compatability issues in the past with Comcast but I think that has been cleared up now.

At compuplus.com, they have the Motorola sb4200 for $62. I bought one last summer from them and it has been working fine. I highly recommend the modem and the store.

I would honestly just lease it...

IF you still get the FULL or more connection with it, why not pay 3 bucs... IF it breaks, you get the free replacement(s)...
