What invention, discovery would astound you?

SSSnail

Lifer
Use of fire.
Invention of the wheel.
Electricity.
First flight.

Those, I think, are among some of the most astounding discovery of the human race. Due to the exposure to science fiction, information and the posibilities with modern science, I don't think anything that we could invent today could match up to the awe and reverence of past discoveries, short of time travel or immortality.

Not even fusion, not even cloning, nor DNA restructuring could make me jump out of my chair and cheer. So what would stop you in your track and say "Wow!"?

I might agree with you if you took first flight out.
Flight is something that we have seen since day 1.

But seriously, I try to keep update with scientific breakthroughs and some of it is really damn impressive.

telepathy ( technologically assisted if necessary 😛 )
teleportation
useful matter creation from energy
light / faster than light travel

I personally think we need to look towards inventing a learning machine, like something that downloads knowledge into your brain, ala Neo in Matrix. No more wasted months and years and decades learning something; just download it. I bet afterwards we'd see a HUGE jump in other scientific breakthroughs as a result of essentially everyone being up to speed immediately.

I would have to say things along the lines of

- Teleportation
- Complete surgeries using microrobots for lack of better name that could be injected and fix anything. An example would be someone severs a leg off, docters place it in correct position and then sprinkles these microrobots over the reattachment area andthey do the rest.

I think the next big discovery that will make people jump out of thier seats with be the cure for aids, cancer or maybe the invention of a cure all drug that will be able to adapt to whatever disease of infection someone has and eliminate it.

Hmm...

What lies beyond the outer reaches of the known universe
End stage genetic medicine. (re-engineering genes to regrow limbs, fix deformities, etc)
Faster than light travel
Faster than light communication

I agree with genetic medicine. I was reading about how they are really close to perfecting a grown functioning liver. It is grown on a lattice type structure which dissintegrates over time

wireless power transmission. NO more Recharging cell phones, laptops, mp3 players, etc.

a Tesla gun

teleportation

way to read minds/thoughts, or just communicate without verbally talking

i think he meant stuff that was actually plausible on some level

something that was at least in the realm of possibility, no matter how extreme it might sound
