What in the hell makes a MKIV Supra so much more expensive than, say a Z32 300ZX?

Other than the Fast and the Furious, why the hell are these cars so damn expensive?! I mean, I love MKIVs and all, but for the dough, why not get something like a 300ZX and save yourself $15,000?

because the 300zx doesn't have a rock solid 2jz, nor the toyota build, nor the spacious engine bay ;)

Who cares? For the extra thousands and thousands of dollars you could STILL have a Z32 making a ton of HP for less

So what, a Mustang/F Body can do that easily, yet I don't see them going for $30,000. What justifies the sky high prices? Because they have more potential? Probably, but I can't see why the prices are so nuts...it just doesn't seem worth it.

Those cars are a dime a dozen, about as aerodynamic as a brick and not nearly as refined.

Most of the problem IS that fvcking movie. :| As soon as that hit, every goddamn ricer with a few bucks to spend got a boner for that car, went to buy them, and drove prices way up. Then, once they got the car, they ran out and bought the ugliest body kit they could find, madd tyt3 dubz, and 600lbs of stereo sh!t. Once all that crap was in place, they then painted the whole thing lime green or orange, or some other ridiculous color, and added a hideous "graphics" kit.

I was looking at buying one for YEARS, as soon as I could afford it...now that I can, the prices are astronomical because of that stupid movie. :|:| I'm still planning on it, but it won't be for a while, now. Hell, I even made a thread about it, although I'm too lazy to dig it up.

toyotas have always been expensive. especially the supras. toyota tried to make them corvette killers and they only they killed was themselves in the states because of their cost. they are rare to find for sale now because of toyota not making them. they are collectors items. they only thing equal to the supra that would cost more would be a lexus supra. Cheers!

Supras are nice cars with a ton of potential, but definitely overrated and overpriced. Comparative price/performance ratio is not very good. Bling factor is high though.

Supply and demand...there weren't that many made.
For instance 1998 Production #'s Supra (N/A and TT) = 1,232

I too wanted a MkIV back in the early to mid 90's.

Dime a dozen, true, but every time I look, I find a ton of TT Supras for sale, if one really wanted one, they could find one. As for aerodynamics:

MKIV = .33
Last Gen Firebird = .32
Pref Gen Mustand = .36

so I don't think it's aerodynamics, and not as refined, true, but you could buy a brand new mustang for less than a 10 year old Supra that has a worn suspension/interior. And for that matter, is a Supra that much more refined than an RX-7 or a 300ZX? I realize *why* it's a better car, but I just can't get it why people are paying so damn much for them

The RX7 at least, costs a lot more to maintain then a supra. a mid 90's supra is to some extent, a god damn camry. Damn thing runs forever. The damn sexy looking RX-7 on the other hand will need engine rebuilds like every 60, and burns oil and since its rotory, if it breaks down, work on it yourself or go to only certain well-respected mechanics that'll charge ya.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet are the driving characteristics.

300ZX's backs tend to break loose w/o warning when cornering too fast.
