Looks like it turns into a rather nice looking butterfly from the google searches I did.

I got lucky. I knew it was a caterpillar (certainly not a slug.) I did a google image search for caterpillar false eyes, then looked through the results 'til I found one that looked the same.

God made them that way, silly.

Yes, but of course.

God was looking around one day and said "dammit, these stupid birds are eating all my caterpillars". He could have just said "listen birds, don't eat so many caterpillars" and they would have to obey, cuz he's God and all. But instead he just gave his favorite caterpillars the fake eyes. Probably because it was funnier. That's what I like to think happened, anyway.

My boss actually mounted it on the wall in his office

It wil just shrivel up into nothing unless you properly preserve it.

The standard evolution theory is something like this:
[*]Colors change through mutations.
[*]This particular color pattern meant that fewer of this type were eaten.
[*]Thus more of that color pattern had babies.
[*]Thus you get more and more of that color pattern. Instead of a rare mutation, it becomes common.

This explains it quite nicely. The classical example of this theory is the peppered moth example in England which you can google to find out more about.

The caterpillar's coloration warns potential predators that the caterpillar appears larger than it is i.e. a snake. cool looking images btw.
