What improvements will arrive with 880G mobos?

Running a 780G now and was considering a 790GX but wanted to ask if waiting for the 880G makes sense.

Mostly yes. I guess 880G will be 55nm like 790GX (vs. 65nm 780G) and it will be minor improvements as all new tech does, but feature-wise I don't expect anything ground-breaking. And to be realistic I can't really think of what AMD can add more except gigabit ethernet (only thing missing compared to Intel/NV's offerings). And in the case of Intel platform, most boards opt for 3rd party NICs to save cost anyway.

Edit: Quick googling tells me 880G will bring DX10.1 (vs. DX10.0 780G) but I doubt that's what anyone will be waiting for.

780g is already 55nm.

so is the 740g


I doubt it would even need a new chipset to support AM3 as there are 790GX boards for am3 and 790gx and 780g are more or less the same chip.

Since the 880G is still 55nm, I don't think the gpu part will be much different. UVD2 will already be in the 785G, so i figure they could just update the 880G to have the 4000 series shader cores, and the 7.1 backend , instead of 3000 series with 5.1 hdmi.

Unless they want to make a really big IGP with say 80shaders. Or maybe they will be able to get 880G on 40nm . There were some 880G boards showed off at some computer shows already and I thin kthey are 55nm still though.
