We got a phone call from on of the b/f's credit card companies the day before yesterday. they were a bit concerned cause ... well, they wanted to know if he made 1) a purchase of $2,645.00 from Tower Records and $6,500.00 purchase from Newegg, and a purchase for $699.00 for something else ... all were to be delivered to Michagan (we are in NJ)... needless to say that we did NOT make these purchases.

Hahaha!!
:)
I really wonder how thieves like that (the newegg purchase) actually expect to receive shipment at house addresses without getting traced/caught...

Unless you know someone, it'd probably be hard to get rid of the stone. Maybe if you found the right jeweler, he'd give you a quarter or half its value.

If decent enough quality, you might look into how much it would cost to have the rock recertified. If certified, you can get rid of the diamond on your own using the certificate as your credential.

I don't think that it's generally true that all contemporary diamonds have numbers engraved on them. I bought a pretty decent GIA certified diamond a few months ago. It's larger than 1 carat, and there's no number on it.

It's not hard to look for the number yourself. You need a magnifying glass. Look at the girdle (the edge where the "top" and "bottom" halves meet). The number refers to an existing certification report...

Most likely, a found diamond won't be of any great value. It could be, but it's not likely. If I were the finder, I would tell the owner of the establishment and turn the rock in to the PD. If you're interested, ask how long you need to wait to claim it as yours if no one shows up for it.

I can imagine how upset the person who lost the rock probably is. The diamond is probably a lot more valuable to the loser than to the finder.

Gemesis. Theres one other but I cant think of the name of it right off. Supposedly the Gemesis diamonds are so good you cant tell the difference between them and the naturals. Also, thay say they can turn out a karat in like 3 days if I remember correctly. Ironically enough, the machines to make them? Russian. The Russians couldnt ever perfect the process, some guy bought the machines, had a few University smarty pants come computerize them and pow. There crankin out as good of diamonds as can be found.
I think I saw this in a Bond movie :D.

But, get back to the real vs fake. It's true that most people can't tell the difference between cubic zirconia vs a real diamond, let alone the different grades and colors and clarity. But, you do! The value of authenticity is not because it looks identical, but because the rarity of it.

look up the article on wired.com about the artificial diamonds. they say natural diamonds arent rare at all...just companies like DeBeers sit on piles and piles of diamonds and release only a small amount at a time...thus making the public think they are rare and thus atrificially inflating the prices

You'd just hope that it's not one of these diamond. If you lose a diamond, how would you feel?

wow!!! are these prices the average prices? 1 karat diamont costs $14K!!!!!

damn you DeBeers

Those are artificial diamonds, a real one would cost you quite a bit more.
No it wouldn't. A real diamond of that size, even the highest quality diamond, would likely cost you quite a bit less than $14K.

Why didn't you quote the rest of my post, which refutes what you just said? Those are colored diamonds, which are quite a bit more expensive than a colorless diamond.

The answer is quite simple, and unfortunately, quite easy for thieves to get away with. No, I'm not going to post how to get away with stealing. :|

Mine told me that if I bought her a real (DeBeers) diamond, she'd dump my ass. :)

Maybe you just need to find a rational girl. ;)

what do you do ?

Ok, here's the law of New York State (where your profile says you live) in relevant part (breaks and emphasis added 'cuz the website sucks):

S 252. Found property and found instruments to be deposited with
police; penalty for failure to deliver to police; delivery to persons in
possession of premises where found.
1. Except as provided in subdivision
five of section two hundred fifty-six of this chapter or as otherwise
prescribed pursuant to section two hundred fifty of the general
municipal law, any person who finds lost property of the value of twenty
dollars or more
or comes into possession of property of the value of
twenty dollars or more with knowledge that it is lost property or found
property shall, within ten days after the finding or acquisition of
possession thereof, either return it to the owner or report such finding
or acquisition of possession and deposit such property in a police
station or police headquarters of the city where the finding occurred or
possession was acquired,

3. Except as provided in subdivision four of this section, any person
who shall refuse or wilfully neglect to comply with the provisions of
subdivision one or subdivision two of this section shall be guilty of a
misdemeanor and upon conviction thereof shall be punished by a fine of
not more than one hundred dollars or imprisonment not exceeding six
months or both.

S 253.
The police with whom found property or a found instrument is deposited
as provided in this article shall give to the person depositing it a
receipt identifying the transaction of deposit and identifying the
property or instrument.
Such identification may be by description and
recital of the facts of the transaction or by reference numbers,
duplicate copies of records, or other method connecting the receipt with
the records of the police with respect to the property or instrument and
the transaction.

S 254. Disposition of lost property
2. If at the end of the period specified in subdivision seven of
section two hundred fifty-three of this chapter the owner has not
claimed the property, it shall be delivered to the finder, or person
entitled to assert the rights of the finder as provided in section two
hundred fifty-six of this chapter, upon his demand therefor, and upon
payment of all reasonable expenses incurred in connection therewith.

So do the right thing and the legal thing: turn it over to the police.

To those would-be thieves in this thread: Why do you always try to justify your actions by saying that everybody would do the same as you? Not everybody is a piece-of-#*$&#* thief like you.
