What if the US got an Autobahn?

That would be cool.

Interesting questions pop into my head:

1. What would be the penalty for speeding on the autobahn?

2. What would the state troopers drive to patrol that road?

I could google the answer to what the Germans do...but eh, I'm a lazy sob.

You can't speed on the autobahn you twit

More death, just like in Germany.

"Many proponents of increased speed limits cite the experience of the German autobahn system, which is generally believed to have no speed limits whatsoever and a lower fatality rate than American highways, thus suggesting that higher speeds do not adversely affect safety. In reality, 31% of the autobahn was posted with permanent speed limits in 1993, and during all but four years since 1975, the death rate on the autobahn has been higher than that on U.S. interstates."

And this is with their stricter licensing requirements.

Speed kills.

I would love to see what happens to car insurance if we had an autobahn. Cause you know
that we have too many stupid people that don't know how to drive at 25mph let alone 80-100mph.

So after a few deaths, and as a result, insurance companies getting sued. What do you think insurance is going to
cost. Especially since its already so cheap.

I'd be doing 150 in a Ford Escort
Impossible. The car would explode well before it hits 150.

actually, i thought that when it hit 88 mph it travelled back in time to the year 1955. 🙂

seriously, perhaps a separate licensing program for driving on an american autobahn, something more resembling the german process, and much more strict than the already lame licensing program currently in use here.

Licensing program is state controlled in the US, so it's an over-generalization to refer to all of America as having a lame licensing program.

that's true, i shouldn't have generalized to the other states. new york's isn't very demanding at all. drive around for 10 mins, do a broken U turn, parallel park, pull out of spot and drive back to starting point.

Wrong car.

wait, this isn't a ford escort? 🙂

Not unless they rebadged a DeLorean as a Ford Escort... 😀

You'd think the gull-wing doors would be a dead giveaway, but nooooooo ... 😛

I was under the impression some parts of the autobahn had limits. Now if we had one in the United states we would just have a crap load of soccer moms slowing down the highway or teenagers going 80 mph during a blizzard.

bye bye gas mileage...car doesn't get good mileage going 150mph. at least maybe some of those stupid SUV drivers would sell their monster trucks and get a normal sized sports car. now that would be sweet. oh yeah...and hauling ass would be sweet to.

YOu guys are assuming that people would drive on an American Autobahn they way that Europeans do, which would never happen. 95% of Americans aren't even aware that people drive dfferently on Autobahns than they do on our current highways. There would probably be no accidents because nobody would drive like Europeans on the Autobahn - there would be no clash between people who know how to drive on a autobahn and people who don't.

Really, I'd be happy with a special lane just for drivers who are eating and talking on the phone.

I'd be happy if they forced all those drivers to ride the short bus, which is where they should be anyway if they insist on yapping on a cell phone while driving at high speeds.

My driving test in Rhode Island wasn't event that hard. We had to drive around and follow instructions.
Do a 3-point turn. And park in parking lot. Thought to myself afterwords, damn what did I do all that parallel
parking practice for.

And even renewing my license, I have seen that once you get a license its basically yours for life.
I have seen people that might as well be blind (Could not read the 3rd line on the Eye chart).
Actually the quote on reading line 5 was, "What 5th line, I only see 2." oh you can only
see the 2nd line. Well in that case you just need mirrors on both sides of your car. Ya, I want that person
driving next to me.

I also think states should consider putting large SUVs in another class, requiring a separate license for. I mean
I am sick of soccer moms and others driving around a huge SUV and not being able to drive it. Those vechiles can
cause alot of damage when they get into accidents. I would kind of like the person driving it to know how to drive them.

amen....and we could put spike strips and other obstacles in their lane for them to deal with while they drive....obviouslly they like a challenge so lets give it to them

Give me the G6155 Interceptor from Spy Hunter, and I'll give them a challenge they'll remember. Twin fifty-cals and a missile pod on the roof. Oh yeah. 😀

I think it is time to repost the VCD made from the Documentory that was on the Discovery channel. Let me see if I still have it.
