What if the US got an Autobahn?

Wouldn't it be cool if the US got an Autobahn? I realize that at the beginning some people would die becuase they don't know how to drive but that would probably happen anyway.

And quickly it would seem that the result would be more efficient travel and less traffic jams.

It would take probably a fairly long time for the drivers to get used it, not to mention it would be nearly impossible to build and/or change the highways that are already in existence to an Autobahn. I heard US drivers are the ones who almost kill people when they drive on the real AutoBahn...

I would be one of the dead people in the first day. I'd be doing 150 in a Ford Escort and pull the e-brake.

You have to look at Germany's Autobahn and their laws governing driving first, though. Germany's requirements for getting your driver's license are STRICT, whereas the US is a joke for the most part.

An Autobahn here would probably just drive the death rate up due to assmasters who don't know how to drive, think they own the road, you name it. We need to focus on improved driver training, etc. before we even think about putting an Autobahn with no speed limit in the US.....

EDIT: As someone mentioned above, people would also have to get used to driving on an Autobahn to begin with....

Well if you put it that way, I am all for it. Nothing like legal population control.

yeah the bad part is the escort does NOT do 150. even the Escort ZX2 has a limiter at like 125

Agreed... but i'm actually more worried about those not attentive enough to respond safely to those fvckatrds who are driving recklessly. But yes... Autobahns or not I think we need to change the way we practically hand out licenses to everyone.

it won't happen for many reasons, among them insufficient driver education (big time) and insufficient vehicle inspections. american drivers + their cars = scary at 35mph, let alone at 80 or more...

My escort likes to hiccup when it's doing 75... at 150 it would probably become anti-matter.

This seems to come up once a year. ;)
Never could happen! In Germany you are required to learn to drive via a strictly governed process... a license cost between 1500-2000$. So people tend to cherish their license. Try that here... and just because of the driving classes you would have to take you would get the ACLU all over you telling you that the "Less Fortunate" can't possibly expected to pay that kind of price. Sad... but true!

Impossible. The car would expload well before it hits 150.

I have yet to see anything expload. I wonder what that involves....:D:D:D

It simply wouldn't work here... people don't pay enough attention when they drive.
I drove a 2002 330 on the autobahn, and the germans know enough to watch behind them for cars going faster than them, and they stay in the correct lane.... unlike americans.
Its exactly like the escalators... people in a hurry go left and everyone else stays on the right.

What if the US got an Autobahn?

It'd be very cool, though we sort of have one in Montana. No speed limit! WEEEE! Anyway, I don't think it'd happen. 1) Who would pay for it?
2) Would the public use it if the asshats who can't drive start driving up the death rate?

Impossible. The car would explode well before it hits 150.

actually, i thought that when it hit 88 mph it travelled back in time to the year 1955. :)

seriously, perhaps a separate licensing program for driving on an american autobahn, something more resembling the german process, and much more strict than the already lame licensing program currently in use here.

Licensing program is state controlled in the US, so it's an over-generalization to refer to all of America as having a lame licensing program.
