What if people could use 100% of their brains....

I think at most people use around 10% of their brain capacity. They say geniuses use slightly more but not by much. So if there was someone who by a freak accident learned to fully utilize their brain capacity what would they be able to do? read minds, make billions, come up with the perfect pickup line that never failed???

interesting

very interesting

They would realize that death is inevitable, thus stop doing anything...

1) wouldent be any more stupid posts
2) we would realize that everything that we do is trivial. so why do anything at all

I always thought that 10% thing was bogus. Our brains are bigger than those of chimps. Our brains are this way through evolution. If we only needed them 10% as big as they are they'd never have grown as large as they are.

Actually, I doubt that much of the brain is unused. Much of the mind operates below the level of awareness. Ever try to remember something, could not, then it just pop up when you apparently forgot about it? The problem was being worked on, you just didnt realize it. Your brain is functioning, processing all the time. You just are so used to it, you don't even notice.

What if it was just the opposite, everything we do is not trivial. Scientists might be able to learn how to reverse or drastically slow down the aging process, new cures for diseases could be found, hell they might be able to resurrect the recently deceased.

if everyone could use 100% of their brain, we'll be exterminating ourselves.
just think of all the mad men, like Sadden...

I'm not sure how much of our brain we really use, but I think it's safe to say there is far more the brain is capable of that we have yet to tap.

On what scientific evidence do you base this "safe" assumption?

Personally I beleive it to be truth or very close to truth, most people have difficult times remembering people they met only a few hours earlier. From my understanding the brain is made up of millions and millions of connections (synapeses I think) the more these connections are utilized the easier it is for people to recall information. This can be proved by just observing children most children who are read to and given certain types of attention at a young age usually have an easier time in school and taking information later in life. So basically the more you use your brain the large capacity of it you utilize, however I still doubt that even the most cerebral person out there is using the majority of their brains potential.

Geniuses are always a "bit" out of whack mentally. So if they only use slightly more of their brain than the average human, I'll stick with my 10%.

I don't believe that 10% number. We don't understand the brain enough to know what every part of it is doing at a given time. In order to start drawing up percentages of what isn't being used, we would need to understand 100% about what goes on, and how.

maybe that 10% is an inaccurate number but I think its obvious that the brain is woefully under-utilized, it just not clear how much so

The actual storage capacity isn't that huge compared to today's standards? A few terabytes? maybe. But the actual processing power of the human brain is very impressive, just think about all of the things it's doing right now keeping you alive, all of your organs etc. There's more going on up there than you may think.

how are his arguments shallow? and where is the proof that you only use a small portion of the brain? the arcticle pretty much refuted most of the "10 percent" claims and even gave sources. oh yes, shallow indeed.
