Imagination is the result of neurons doing their thing. The information from them cannot travel faster than the speed of light. Our brains aren't that damn special, we're just primates with freakishly large ones. By that reasoning, you might as well say that bacteria are delivering toxins into our bodies from the 42nd dimension when you're sick with an infection.Originally posted by: SunnyD
Heh, funny you mention that. Obviously other universes exist where basic causality doesn't... look at this thread!
Actually to be honest - who says we don't already have the technology to do so. Imagination, it's the only thing faster than the speed of light. It allows us to warp reality, and in fact also allows us to escape standard causality. Who's to say that our subconscious isn't tapping into these other universes when we "wander", our dreams for instance generally defy logic and causality. There is a hell of a lot more there than one might first think.

Assuming this Universe is NOT some experiment, and that it's a bubble of spacetime floating about in "something," then maybe after our technology's advanced another billion years or so, maybe we'll have found a way of breaking out of spacetime, and exploring whatever lies beyond it.Originally posted by: pontifex
ok...you'll be dead by then, so again, does it really matter?
and where exactly would we go? if this universe is a science experiment and we are just super tiny, where would we find anything similar to what we have now?
Would it be anything remotely similar to what we have now? Most certainly not. Hell, basic causality as we know it might not even be present.

That's exactly why I wish the Singularity would occur soon....

I can say in my mind that a chicken is a pencil, and I can say that that this is truth in a quasar 10 billion light years away. Has any information traveled 10 billion light years in a few seconds? None whatsoever. If chickens are pencils in that quasar, then it's mere coincidence that I conjured up that idea independently.

What if our universe is just a science fair project created by some pimply teenage kid in a larger universe outside our own. Our universe might be 13 billion years old, but for this kid, the time elapsed might just be a week. This kid just wants to describe the development of intelligence and civilizations to classmates and teachers, and one day, after the science fair, the kid might just throw OUR UNIVERSE in a garbage can!! That would be the end of our universe!!!

Also, the creator may be able to freeze time and analyze the simulation, but we would never know it happened. What if his simulation re-booted?

What if the simulation started 5 minutes ago and we were fed our brains with information that makes us believe the Universe started 13 billion years ago. Our universe could be 5 minutes old!!!
