What I don't get about the republican party...

Why do they keep moving farther and farther right and keep scaring moderates away with all their bible thumping crazyness? The religious right is gonna vote for them no matter what, so why do they feel like they need to go so far right to make them all happy? All they would need to do is throw out a token "yay god" every once in a while to keep them all happy. Instead the entire party seems to be going full bible thumping crazy.

I used to be a republican until they starting moving right, becoming more and more anti-intellectual, and focusing on stupid shit like abortion, gay marriage, etc...

Now I either vote democrat or 3rd party.

I really want to vote republican. I don't care about poor people. I hate things like welfare and social security. I don't care that you lost your job to a computer. Life isn't fair.

What I do care about are things like science, education, keeping religion out of politics, and fiscal responsibility.

They just don't seem to get it. If they would just get rid of all the racist, anti-intellectual, creationist bible thumpers like Akin and Bachmann they would actually have a respectable politcal party for those of us who are more moderate. Until then I won't even think about voting republican.

I was going to vote republican last election because I don't mind McCain, but then he went and picked Palin, who is pretty much the definition of crazy, ignorant republican these days.

I'd rather see Obama and the rest of the democrats deliver a beatdown on the republicans to teach them a lesson. Too bad they probably won't learn anything from it. Maybe next election they can go even farther right. Surely that will work.

While the democrats go extreme left socialism. If I had to pick between the two extremes I would pick the bible thumpers every time.

1) That isn't really true.
2) Even if it were, at least one could argue for the ideas in some sane basis of reality.

I'd rather vote for someone sane whose ideas I didn't agree with than someone who is just plain fucking crazy.

I am getting tired of having to pick for no one I like or can identify with. The party system needs to go altogether. All of these idiots sit up on the hill fighting like bloods and crypts to the point it doesn't matter who's idea is best. It's like "that idea didn't come from my side of the isle so F-U!" and then nothing gets done.

Meanwhile it's Super-PACs, mega-corporations and special interest groups that keep getting their puppets put on the ballets who hold their earmark agendas above the well being of the country and the general population just gets screwed over for it.

Maybe that's a little bit sensationalist, but it's the way I feel about everything these days. No one in power seems to give a damn about anything but the almighty Benjamin's and how THEY are going to continue to pat each other on the behind and line each other's pockets. The corporations and the elite buy the elections and that's who the elected officials work for.

I want to know who's looking out for me in this day and age because I don't believe in either of these idiots Obozo or Mittens OR the majority of Congress. I mean, I don't have the answers either, but it just seems like no one in power is really trying anymore - or if they are then they can't get past the bi-partisan BS to make anything good happen.

You must have missed the edit I made right after I posted it. I thought I was in P&N when I made the post since I was in it earlier in the day last time I was on AT. Get a life.

You're a moderator. Why don't you just make yourself useful and move it to P&N?

Id sooner have full blown socialism before religious fascism, which is what the far/religious right wants.

What do you mean they are moving to the right.

Things like support for same-sex marriage are radical left-wing positions. Just because the country moves leftward and Republicans stay the same does not mean the Republicans are moving to the right.

In fact the better question is when did the "radical" "right" embrace radical left-wing ideas like the acceptability of divorce and fornication.

Owning slaves and letting women vote was also once debated. Now it's common fucking sense. Who gives a shit if two gay people get married? IMO they should just ban all forms of legal marriage and keep it a religious institution. Just one more way to eliminate religion from politics.

Right about the time people starting calling them out on the hypocracy for shunning those things in public while embracing them in private.

Having a definition of marriage beyond a narcissistic circle is not a radical right wing idea.

Supporting same-sex marriage is a radical left-wing idea. Stop crying about it.

What republicans don't seem capable of understanding is that there are two kinds of marriage. Legal marriage and religious marriage. Nobody is forcing your pastor to marry gay people. If you are trying to define marriage as a religious institution then it has no place in law and should be eliminated from goverment altogether.

So you agree that your definition of radical right winger is moving to the left?

Yeah you got me. They've really turned liberal now that they've finally accepted black people and women into society as equals. :D Even though it's really just a show for most of them. Secretly Akin and the rest of them want the good ol' days back.

On a related note, can I be a democrat and a capitalist pig at the same time?

I am not defining marriage as a religious (ie Christian) institution.

Neither Japan nor China support same-sex "marriage" and neither one is run by radical bible thumping Christians.

You're wrong! You have to believe my rigid, unrealistic view!
No you're wrong, you have to believe MY unrealistic, rigid viewpoints.

We ALL lose with these retarded polarized thought patterns and us versus them mentalities.

China's still in the dark ages for gay rights so no surprise there.

the Democrats are moderately right of center.

LoL--thinking there are leftists in this country :D

(yes, the dems have their own fringe wackadoos like the repubs--but they are both milder in intent and in posing a real threat to "glorious 'murika")

LOL. America doesn't have a viable left wing party. The Democrats are centrists and the republicans are extreme right.

If the Democrats were left wing then where are the bills suggesting the dissolution of private property? Where are the demands for a 100% tax on all profits above a specific amount? Where is the motion to make atheism the official state stance on religion? WHERE IS A BILL MANDATING A SINGLE PAYER HEALTHCARE SYSTEM or the nationalization of all insurance?

As to the OP. If the Republicans didn't pander to the religious on social policy then the religious might take a moment to think and realize that the Democrats more closely resemble what Jesus would want in economic policy (Since there's no viable American communist party; which would most closely mimic the financial policies promoted by Jesus and the first disciples/early church)

no of course not. It does not fit in with the carefully-constructed assumptions that our tent parties want us to believe about "the others."

You need to rethink what you truly believe and get back in line.
