havent read the thread yet but for me, ive given up cable. its just an expense not worth having. i havent really been to the movies very much either and i used to go a few times a month. i also dont go many places now either as much because gas is expensive.

other than that i never really bought a lot of stuff or had too much frivolous spending so i havent had to give up much.

Nothing really, we havent been on a vacation in like 7 years tho. As far as normal spending habbits nothing has really changed, except maybe how much food we buy. I recently bought a $190 4890 and a $550 telescope.

I'm not buying any new games lately (though it'll be hard to resist when all the new stuff comes out before Christmas) and I took the data plan off my Blackberry.

Looking for a better job, a pay raise and better working conditions aren't worth more than job security.

This is true.

I haven't stopped looking around for other jobs, but I'm a lot more hesitant about leaving my current position. The pay is good, the benefits are great, and I have great job security (at least compared to a lot of other people), so even though I want to do something else, I'd have a hard time giving this up right now.

Nothing.

I rarely spend much £££ on stuff I don't need.

News of the recession is beaten into our heads 24/7 with the cable news cycle, complete with stores of heartache and loss for those affected. What have you given up, if anything, as a result of current economic conditions?

My income has not decreased and I am still employed. However, the recession has caused me to look at wasteful expenditures and reduce or eliminate them.

The greatest discretionary expense I had every month were bar trips. I spent around $500 at a single bar in October. This isn't a healthy thing to do even during the fat times, and this summer my bar trips have been reduced to one or two times per month for special occasions.

Nothing. I was laid off in late 2008, got a new job with a better commute and a 5% raise before my severance ran out, and have made 2x my yearly salary in the market in the past 4 months. I can't complain too much.

we actually spent more money; we bought things for the house like another tv, a ps3, a grandfather clock, had a deck built, deck furniture, etc

Pretty much absolutely nothing... it's called living within your means.

Is that $400,000.00 mortgage payment killing you? Well, no one made you get it when you only earn 60k/year, asshole. Plus, the house was only really worth $150k to begin with.

he's right

we bought our house last year in November, when things were bad. We could afford a lot more than we bought, but we bought something well within our means that would provide some margin of safety if one of us lost our income. It would also allow us to save more money and live comfortably.

nothing. my family's personal economic climate is way better than last year (i got a bit of a raise, but it's mostly because my wife graduated and started working), so we're buying a lot of new stuff and still saving a ton and paying off debt as well.

Going out and eating fast food on a daily if not weekly basis. I probably eat fast food once a month now, if that.

Cut that right out and have way more money plus more energy.
