What happens when you ignore somebody?

There's a couple of posters here that have totally rubbed me the wrong way. One has been on my ignore list for a long time and I just added another. I'm wondering...

1. Does it mean you don't get alerts when they post?

2. Will you not see posts from them in threads they make posts in when you go into those threads?

3. Will you not see threads they start in the list of threads?

  • No alerts (what are alerts?)
  • You will not see threads started by the person.
  • You will not see posts by the person unless it is the last post in the thread in which case you will see that the person posted but not what they posted unless you click to see it.
  • You will see replies to the person but not the quoted message (makes things a bit hard to follow sometimes).
  • You will occasionally see a thread started by the person listed over there ==> in the recent threads list but only in the root forum view.

You probably can't see this post. :D

The proper response would have been for everyone to ignore this thread. You wrecked it, freaking newbie.

Yuh, I see you! Thanks.

OK, I think I'll just remove both those creeps from my avoid list, don't need that shit. I'll just notice who it is and ignore as I already do. I just about always notice who's posting what before I read it. Some people I know right away what they say is apt to be good, interesting, weird, sarcastic, witty, whack, whatever... or a troll. I like to avoid trollers.

Alerts? You don't know what Alerts are? You probably have them turned off. They are popups that tell you people have posted to threads you are subscribed to. There's a flag symbol at the top right and clicking it you see all your recent alerts and can access them directly or open a new tab to them one by one using the right mouse button context menu. I like Alerts. I think they were instituted around a year ago.

If you've had at least one user on your ignore list for a long time, how are unable to answer those questions for yourself?

The ignoree may have gotten banned after placed on ignore. The first person I put on ignore was banned shortly after I did so. I didn't notice for quite awhile.

Im pretty sure that they cease to exist the moment you click that button.
Quantum physics, ok? It's complicated.

Ok, let's assume that unlikely series of events may have taken place. So put someone else who posts frequently on ignore. Should take you about 30 minutes to figure out "what happens".

I could probably have figured it out in detective mode. Easier to post this thread. Are you one of those guys who hates anyone who does something the easy way? For fuck's sake...

This seems to have nailed it. It would probably take a lot longer than 30 minutes to figure it out, way way longer:
  • You will not see threads started by the person.
  • You will not see posts by the person unless it is the last post in the thread in which case you will see that the person posted but not what they posted unless you click to see it.

When someone is on ignore you also will see a button "show ignored content" in the thread. You have the option to view the content. I always avoid falling into the temptation because any time I do, I regret it. I only have a couple people on ignore actually. They don't seem to post that often but when they do it's usually some kind of personal attack.

They cease to exist in this universe. They continue to exist in the 42 gazillion other universe where you didn't click the button, so it's a relatively futile gesture.

Can you divulge who is in your ignore list? ;)
ATM nobody, I unignored both of them because of the details I saw about what happens in this thread. Figured it would be less complicated if I just ignore them, but not officially ignore them.

The guys I had on ignore were FelixDaCat (SP) and SlowSpyder. If I could remember right then how he spelled his user name I would have included Imported_Taj_Mahal the other day.

They curl up into a ball of slobbering, whining snot.

That's the highland145 effect.

Just to be clear, are Mayne and Naer balls of slobbering whining snot because you ignored them or did you ignore them because they were already balls of slobbering whining snot?
