What happens when you combine an AH-64 Apache, a tree, hot-shot pilots and bad depth perception?

and night vision goggles.

"do you think i can make it through there [between some trees]?}

"no"

"oh, look how big it is [space between trees]"

crash!

unreal

They're frantically trying to land...8 1/2" of a blade was missing...It was shaking violently.

Yeah, pretty typical stuff. My favorite has to be the pilot (a full Colonel, and commander of the Air Wing) who clipped a building with his B-1 while on taxi to the runway leaving Bright Star '97. Did $300 million in damage to the plane, and essentially doubled the cost of the entire exercise (and bringing a few thousand guys over to Egypt for about a month of training ain't cheap).

Not only that, the plane was rendered unflyable, and you can't exactly stick it on a barge across the Atlantic. Needless to say, leaving a nuclear capable strategic bomber in a place like Egypt wasn't thought to be a good idea, so add on the cost of stationing a few dozen MPs on 24/7 guard of the aircraft, and a few months overtime for a few dozen techs to go over there and fix it, and you get the idea why that Colonel probably never got his General stars.

we had an F-4 pilot at bergstrom land with his gear up. the crazy thing was i watched the whole thing. i was talking to a guy at work at one of the fuel stations. right over this guys shoulder i could see the F-4 on approach. it was not a touch and go, he was committed to land. i said "look, his gear is up" and 2 seconds later he touched down. the wing tanks popped but other than that it was OK. he slid down the runway in flames. it looked worse than it was. i'm sure his flying career was over after that one, though.
