There are shift interlocks on modern cars that prevent you from shifting out of park without first stepping on the brake.

Yeah, a lot of cars have override buttons though (Mine does) that let you shift out of park without stepping on the brake.

SpongeBob
You are correct sir.
The reason they have this over ride button is because most of these shift interlocks are electrically activated. If you end up with a dead battery, you are out of luck if you need to shift the transmission for any reason.

<< The Princess of Pop apparently attempted to put the car into second gear whilst travelling at 85mph, causing the car to blow-out, swerve across two lanes before crashing to a stop. >>

She should have been in 2nd gear quite a bit before 85MPH right? :Q YIPES!

Roger, thanks for clearing that up for me, I appreciate it.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, I do have to push down on the shift lever in order to engage Reverse in the 914, never mind about the 1st-Reverse lockout, sorry.

I know someone who did this to his manual transmission. It was an older car adn suffice to say his trany dropped and got left behind.

He was doing 55 at the time.

You will rapidly reverse your aging process and finally roll to a stop as a baby.

<< No, not true. You'll hear a giant crunching and grinding noise as the gears in your tranny bounce off of each other, but it wont lock your drive wheels. >>

<< FALSE
Gears CANNOT grind in an automatic transmission. They are constantely meshed together in an assembly called a planetary gearset. When you shift a automatic transmission into gear, you are allowing hydrualic fluid to travel to pistons that actuate band clutchs which lock the planetary gears in place.

Please do not post about something you are guessing or know nothing about.

Funny, I've been in auto tranny cars that have been put in both reverse (1980 Camero) and park (late 70s Cadilac) at speed, both made a grinding noise.

So I DO know something about it, and I'm NOT guessing.

Please do not be rude to people you know nothing about.

You'd have to purposefully do it in my Saab 900 because there is a boot on the shifter that you have to lift up in order to open the gate to reverse.. with the boot lock there is no way you can accidentally shift into reverse I kinda like that.. not that it's very easy to shift into reverse at higher speeds to begin with tho..

<< most trannys have a lock that prevent you from doing it >>

Mine doesn't, but then again, I'm not a moron.

Same thing that happened when my tranny blew, sounded like a thousand marbles were thrown in my engine.

Actually, I believe newer Corvettes have the reverse lockout, and if I'm not mistaken most of the LS1's do as well.

My friend used to have an old 82 Ford Fairmont, 6cylinder rear wheel drive. Occasionally he'd be going around 15-20mph foward, then he'd shift it into reverse, resulting in a smokey burnout from the rear tires peeling out backwards:) I'd seen him do that at least 30 times and the damn car never broke, it was incredible. He didn't really care what happened to the tranny/differential/motor because he had a second Fairmont at his disposal to leech parts off of. By the time he got rid of the car it still ran perfectly, except for a slight clunk from the differential when shifting into drive.

The new corvettes have a reverse gate that locks over a certain speed. After this spped, it is IMPOSSIBLE to get it into reverse. What kind of moron would, anyways...

my dad did that on my mom's car. He thought he was in his car with the stick shift and was downshifting to third. Put it into reverse at 65Mph.

It caused an accident though my mom's car was safe. The cars behind hit one after another. Since then my mom puts a pillow on top of the auto shifter so he cant shift.

Infact he has done it twice, but the second time was at a lower speed around 30 mph.

For the record Dodge checked the transmission when we sent it for service, they said it was fine. The car is a 1997 Dodge Neon Highline 2.0 SHOC 2Door Coupe.

i did this in a 94 chevy blazer, was going forward about 40 and was screwing around and shifted into reverse instead of neutral  suprisingly the car shut off and the car continued to roll, as if it were in neutral. i dunno if it was a safety thing or luck, but man was i lucky. i would have been in a little trouble :(

I find that funny for some reason. I can't picture what you mean when you say your mother put a pillow on top of the shifter to keep him from shifting into reverse.

My dad did this on an '88 Caravan. He would have been going ~50km/hr downhill on snow (no grip on the road).

( Long story, I'll shorten it)

Winter - largest snowfall in years. Gets up, drives down the hill which curves like an 'S'. After the first curve, he loses control. Neighbour is walking down the middle of the road in front of him (bear in mind this is a STEEP hill, and he shouldn't have been attempting to drive down it in a snowfall in the first place). Slipping down the hill he jamms it into reverse, and ends up in the bushes in front of someones house just before the second curve of the 'S'.

No damage to the car other than a bent license plate. Someone else had done the exact same thing to their car (in the same bushes) 5 minutes earlier, so he didn't have to pay to repair the persons garden either.
