In their role as the minority party, I give the GOP a D. The classic role of the minority party is to hinder the majority as best as they can.

But in an emergency when the country is in obvious trouble the minority acts as a responsible party and works with the majority to get things done. The GOP's response to the current economic crisis has been to come up with Reaganomics again and criticize spending money on monitoring volcanoes.

I mean maybe not right away, Mike Steele is still running around "actin' a foo'" (as he would say in his uncomfortable, uncool and mis-timed groove speak,) Jeb Bush and Romney are a part of the team trying to rehabilitate the party image (hahaha), Michelle Bachmann won't stop talking, and the only semblance of new leadership is Eric "John Edwards Jr" Cantor.

I'd feel good about it.
I keep hearing this from many sources. It's curious that they're "trying to rehabilitate the party image" instead of trying to fix the party. Talk about treating the symptom instead of the problem...

The GOP can not "fix" their party. It is what it is. They can hope that Mr Obama crashes and burns and do what they can to help that happens.

Yeah. The best thing they could do is dilute out all the wingnuts, but so far they are headed in the opposite direction. This is totally predictable. I thought on election night that the GOP in the near future would be a crucible to burn away all the "impure" thoughts and members until all that's left is a small, hardened and uniform core. You could see this movement as soon as Palin was nominated and things were going south (if not even when McCain was nominated over Rush's bloated body and the ensuing backlash.)

The GOP is headed down a long deathspiral. Unless Obama does something drastically inept or stupid, they are in this for a while. Eventually new people (ie not a Bush) will come up and take over the party from the resident nuts, but expect some extremists for the next election or two (if not more.)

This is a bit off topic, but where would the GOP be right now if GWB had not invaded Iraq?

IDK.. its an interesting thought...Had they poured all the effort into Afghan, had they caught bin Laden.. had they saved an the $1T+ on Iraq...
There still would have been all that spending, Katrina.... but you would think 2006 would have went different, and maybe the Dems wouldn't have been so confident to nom Obama over Hillary. You would think McCain wouldn't have gotten the nod (god knows who tho.) GOP voters pissed at spending, but not so much to vote Dem. Maybe Bush got less blame for Katrina as Iraq didn't first set the stage for the realization of incompetence...
You would think a very different outcome surely.
