What good hard liquer is out there?

I'm pretty familiar with vodka, whisky, brandy and gin. Wanna go down to the liquer store and get a bottle of some good hard liquer. But what to get? Always wanted to try tequila. Anyone recommends it? Maybe something else?

i like vodka personally... i dont like tequilla... but i heard the only good tequilla u have to go to mexico to get... but i definitely like vodka... it goes great with almost everything.... at least everything i tried... but if ur straight drinking.. then get the blue stuff... i forget the brand... but it really fvcks u up bad...

Umm...tequila with lemon and salt....fantastic!

Good thing I don't live near Mexico and have easy access to good quality tequila otherwise I'd be intoxicated most of the time 🙂

Tequila - Patron Silver. Expensive but one of my favorite sipping/shooting tequilas. You must also get lime and salt.
Vodka - Stolichnaya. Keep a bottle in the freezer. Makes yummy martinis.
Southern Comfort. Great as a shot w/ lime, or with OJ / Pineapple juice. Tons of uses for mixed drinks. Goes down smoooooooth.
Seagram's 7 - Bourbon, used in 7&7's (Seagrams & 7-up). One of my fav drinks.
Malibu Rum - No bar is complete without it. Infinite uses. Great with coke, any juice, or any tropical drink. Can also use Capt. Morgan's Parrot Bay Rum instead.
Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum, Great with coke or by itself.

I'm new to AnandTech as you can see, I don't know alot about pc's but if there is
something in this world I know a little about it's alcohol, Tequila is great with salt
and lemon but most people still don't like it, Vodka on the other hand is a good
choice, Vodka doesn't have that nasty alcohol taste and it's pretty cheap. As for
mixed drinks it doesn't get any better than Morgan and Coke.

Heh. I've been thinking about ordering a bottle online though, I hear it really doesn't do much other than get you drunk.
I'm a whiskey man, but I'm not too picky about what I drink. Good ole Kessler is good enough for me. I've also gotten into cognacs. Get yourself a bottle of some VSOP cognac (again, I'm not too particular about what brand)

I believe Absinthe is illegal domestically but abroad in spain and other countries it is legal to serve and drink Absinthe

Jack Daniels Whiskey Sour

The proper form of the Whiskey Sour is one part whiskey, two parts sour mix, and two parts orange juice. But even with these proportions, the sour mix is the key. And the store bought sour mixes just don't make a proper drink.

Fortunately, making a sour mix is easy, and it keeps (refridgerated) for more than long enough to use it all. To make the sour mix, combine equal parts lemon juice and sugar in a microwaveable container. Cover, and heat. You don't want it to boil, you want it to be hot enough to disolve the Ume.

The Ume. The mystical ingredient for making proper sour mixes. The Ume is an alkaline, very tart, Japanese plum. If you scour the local Health Food stores, you should be able to find some concentrated Ume. I use Eden Concentrated Ume, a small jar of highly concentrated plums (I believe they concentrate 1 kg into 50 grams). Taking a butter knife (Ume concentrate is awfully stiff when refridgerated), take a knife tipful (more or less depending on how much sour mix you are making), and blend it into the hot lemon juice and sugar mix. Taste, and if it is too acidic (and remember, you are going to be mixing it with whiskey and orange juice), add more Ume to taste. Pour the mixture into containers and refridgerate, and the sour mix is ready to go.

Duuude...have you ever had that stuff? I mean the real stuff, not the faux-absinthe you can get here in the states. It's like flaming liquid liquorice...it's well over 100 proof.:Q

Anywho....my personal favorites are bourbon and scotch whiskey. Maker's Mark, Basil Hayden, Booker's are all good bourbons that you should be able to find. If you want something really interesting, try to find a bottle of AH Hirsch 16 year old....will cost you some loot, but it's far and away the best bourbon I've ever had.

Most of the single malt scotches are good, just each very different from the next depending on where the distillery is and how they make it.

Whiskey! Makers Mark
Takillya- patron or don julio
Vodka-sucks
LINE- good but hard to find
Uzo- Greek stuff that will knock you on your ass

I picked up some Bhajan (Barbados) rum at the duty free shop while I was in Trinidad. Mt. Gay Eclipse Rum - 154 proof, and yet, still smooth going down. Good stuff. =D

Here are a few:

AfterShock: Cinnammon schnapps that has the ratio: more crystals, more proof 😀 (Once you see the bottle, you will understand)
Grappa: Doesn't taste all that great but high in alcohol content
Drambui: A liqueor, poured in a shot glass and sipped (unless you like to have your throat stripped out 😀)

And there is always Johnny Walker Black Label

that is exactly what i was thinking. 98% of what has been listed in here is cheap college crap. he said GOOD hard liquor. now, Macallan 1983 is amazing single malt scotch whiskey. that is my favorite.

Best vodka: Tanqueray (yes, they don't just make gin)
Best gin: Bombay Sapphire

Good tequila is good reposado tequila. Don't get the cheap stuff. And contrary to what is listed here, the "proper" way to drink good tequila is sipped with sangrita, which is a spicy tomato juice-like stuff. You can find recipes on the web. Don't get cheap tequila (Except in a margarita, Cuervo is NOT good).

Toss a shot of Chambord in a margarita for a tasty berry kick.
I like Metaxa.
Tawny Port (does that count as hard liquor?)

Good single malt scotch.
Crown Royal is good value for canadian whisky...

Hehe, I didn't bother listing scotches as most people try them once and then look at you like you're nuts for thinking it tastes good. Anyway, a few of my favorites (I tend to lean toward the peatier ones for the most part).

Glenrothes- a friend of mine gave me a bottle of the 1983 single barrel...amazing stuff)
Bowmore- they're all pretty good, but the 17 year-old is amazing..some of the Cadenhead versions of this are well worth the money as well.
Macallan- What can I say, some of the best sherry-cask whisky ever.
Laphroaig- I wouldn't recommend the 10 year-old...unless you need to strip some paint off any window sills or something...it's pretty ferocious. Funny quote from a whisky web site "The 15-year-old (43 vol.) is another matter. It's the gentrified older brother of the 10-year-old feral child. " That about sums it up...get the 15.
Glenmorangie- really interesting, complex whisky...I'm particularly a fan of the port-wood bottlings.
Talisker- super-spicy, peppery stuff....another one not everyone will like.
Glenfarclas- not quite as refined as Macallan, but lots of sherry flavor..older bottlings are particularly good (my wife brought me a 20 year-old back from the distillery that I guarded like gold).
